William R. was born, 21 Apr 1892, son of William C. and Laura Cecelia (Thompson) Gordon.They were parents of the following children: Gertrude (Mrs. H.E. Gimpel, Brooklyn, NY; William R. (Townsend, MT).
In 1912, William R. graduated from high school in Wheeling, West Virginia, and graduated from the University of West Virginia, at Morgantown, in 1916 with a BS in agriculture. In 1916, William R. came west to Arlee, MT, as an instructor of agriculture in the Consolidated High School for seven months.In Apr 1917, he was sent to Powell County for emergency agricultural work at the time of the US entry into WWI.On 22 May 1917, he was transferred to Townsend, MT, and continued to do emergency work for the government until the end of the war.
