Gordons in Glenlivet
Hi all,
I am looking for any information I can find on my ancestors, who were a family of Gordons who lived in Glenlivet, Banffshire, Scotland. My ggg grandfather was James Gordon, Shoemaker, and he was born on 14th October 1833 in Tomintoul, son of John Gordon, local Constable, and his wife Jean Downie.James was baptised by Donald Carmichael, the local Catholic Clergyman. He was one of eight children, the other seven being George, Elspet, Charles, John, Alexander, Mary and Ann.John Gordon and Jean Downie were married in 1823.On their marriage entry it was noted that John Gordon was the son of John Gordon "late of Stronavaich" and Margaret Stuart. That same John Gordon of Stronavaich (a farm in Glenlivet) had the tack of those lands from 1809 to his death in 1819.On his death certificate it was noted that his wife, Margaret, was still alive, and that he had two children - Elspeth, married to John Shaw in Stronavaich, and John, later to be the Constable.John Gordon of Stronavaich, while he was alive, paid £29/19/-- per annum in 1809 in rent for his lands of Stronavaich, Glenmullie, and two lots of land in Tomintoul village.
Unfortunately I don't know any more.I don't know where John Gordon of Stronavaich came from, nor do I know whether his wife was local or not. There was a tennant family of Stuarts in Glenconglass (in which Stronavaich was formerly included) - Margaret Stuart could have been one of them. All I know is that the whole family was Roman Catholic.
If anyone can help me on this I would really be grateful - any ideas or suggestions as to which sources I should consult would be appreciated.
Thanks very much for any help in advance,
Andrew Simpson
