John, son of Nathan?

Nathaniel Goodspeed (b:1740 - d:1796) [son of Stephen, Nathaniel, Nathaniel, Roger]is documented in the History of the Goodspeed Family by Weston Goodspeed. He has two wives. His son John (by second wife, Lois Whitney)moves west and is not followed in the book. A John shows up in Allegan and Barry counties in Michigan. This John's birth per his tomb stone is 12 May 1790. He lives about 15 miles or less from another son of Nathaniel (also named Nathaniel). The John in Michigan also names his son Ransom, the name of the first Nathaniel's military commander, and the family name of another brother's wife. Can anyone prove these two Johns are or are not the same person? Anyone working on this family too?
