Sarah Goodson NC 1810, Goodson/Milton Connection Rutherford County NC 1800
I have a long post tonight.
Sorry about the length.
I hope the information helps someone.
Anyone who wants to help please contact me privately or on the forum
I am a gr-gr-gr grandson of Jacob Goodson of Walker County, Georgia.
His son John Thomas Goodson married Sarah A. "Sallie" Whittle in Whitfield County Georgia in 1862.
(Many researchers name him as Frank M. Goodson. This is an error. Please change the name in your databases. You won't find a thing on Frank. But, I can show you John's headstone,And a marriage license.)
They had five children in Cherokee County, Texas.
Edward Milton Goodson was my Great grandfather.
My grandmother, Annie Laurie Goodson Odom , was the family verbal historian.
She told me John Thomas' real name as a child and knew a lot about the Goodsons in Texas.
Knew they came from Georgia to Texas. "And North Carolina before that....."
I asked about where "Milton" came from. She didn't know for sure, "but it's a family name."
OK, here's something I found
Rutherford County North Carolina 1800 census lists about 5 Milton families and
......... drum roll please! ...........one Goodson!!

Head of household is Mary Goodson 45 years or older Male.
4 boys under 10
1 10 to 15
1 16 to 25
1 female under 10
There is one female 16-25 listed.
I think the man has remarried. I think this could be Nancy Milton. A second wife.
I couldn't place them geographically in the district by house number. The heads of
household were grouped, more or less,by initial letter....
So, to recap:
MARY IS LIKE, A GUY!
I've had several researchers tell me they suspect Nancy is second wife.
But never this.....
Insanely enough, I'm serious..........
But then, I DID have a Great Great Aunt named John, and a Great Aunt Sam.
If the 1830 Georgia census is right. Nancy was between 50 and 60 years old. So her
birthdate would be 1770 to 1780.
That agrees with the above ages.....
I think Mary Goodsonmarried Nancy Milton within a few years of this
census......five kids under ten gotta have a mama. Or daddy goes nutso!
I know! Gotta find a documents of some kind.
Anyone interested in working on it?
Contact me.
All circumstantial, but a lot of people have worked a lot of years and haven't
found anything concerning Nancy's background.
Maybe the Milton/Melton cousins hold the clue?
I suppose deeds, grants, wills, and marriage bonds / records for about 1790 to 1810
would be the place to start looking for Gr-gr-gr grandpa Mary Goodson.
Also, regarding related Goodsons:
There is a Josiah Goodson listed in Burke County, NC 1810 census.
M252Roll 39Page 221
When you look up Josiah and check the SCANNED image, it's SARAH Goodson.
I'm pretty good with old manuscripts. And, granted it's not a real clear image. But look it up
and check the "J"'s and "S"'s in the other names. You'll see what I mean. It's "Sarah".
It lists:
3 boys under nine
1 boy 10 to 15 (Larkin ?)
1 girl under nine
1 girl 10 to 15
2 women 16 25
1 woman 25 to 44 (Sarah)
It puts Sarah Goodson in Burke County 10 years earlier.
Boy 10 to 15 is probably Larkin. ?
Can anyoneput names to the others, besides Sarah?
I have seen several researchers state that Sarah's husband's name was John Goodson.
Does anyone have anything on this?
Would the ten year difference link a Goodson will or deed , or grant ,already found, to this
family?
Let me hear from you.
