Sandi,
I am from the same line as Jean; Jacob - Williamson - Greenberry.Mr Covert's contention about Nicholas is very interesting, but is filled with suppositions; "probably", "probable", etc.The most important question that remains unanswered is why Nicholas would have done this.I am further mystified as to how Mr Covert could have made the connection with Nicholas of Walker County, GA.Can you shed any light on this?
Mr Covert also made a mistake in identifying my GGGrandfather as Williamson Benjamin when, in fact, his name was Williamson Byrum. One of his son, who Mr Covert idenifies as the mysterious :Ben" was also Willaimson Byrum and was called "Bill" according to my notes.
I have researched the movements of the 23rd Georgia Infantry throughout the Civil War. Williamson and his brother Nicholas served the entire four years of the War and fought in several major battles. They certainly came close to death many times, including the sinking of their troop ship in Charleston harbor by friendly fire.
Please let me know if you can provide any light on the mystery of Nicholas.
Jackie
