Thank you for the contact. No, I have never found any indication of the origin of our Goodridge family. There is in EARLY IMMIGRANTS TO AMERICA 21 August, 1635, Persons to be transported from London to Virginia by the "George" Mr. John Severne, after examination of Gravesend, Thomas Goodridge and Ann Goodridge. EARLY SETTLERS OF MARYLAND by Skordas, p 187, Liber (book) 8, Folio (page) 203, Transported 1665, Service 1677, Henry Goodridge. Also Liber 12, Folio 294, Thomas Goodridge Transported 1669. There are also Goodricks mentioned. OMMITTED CHAPTERS FROM HOTTENS Original Lists of Persons of Quality...there are Guthridge and Gottridge and other variant spellings that settled in Barbados. I believe the first mention we have of our William Goodridge is a list of soldiers in Lancaster Co., VA in Dec 1687. His name is spelled Gutteridge in this instance. But since he is listed with my other ancestors, Hugh Brent, Tobias Horton, I believe he is our William Goodridge and I don't have the foggiest idea if he is the immigrant or is he the descendant of this Thomas and Ann. I believe this Ann is the one they call Ann Goodrich that married a Lightfoot and had a son, Goodrich Lightfoot.
I have always felt that the Virginia Goodridges and the Northern Goodridges were probably of the same ancestors. They all seemed to have been involved in shipping. But I have never been able to connect the two families. There is some information on the Goodridges, maybe yours, in GENEALOGICAL GLEANINGS IN ENGLAND, two volume set with index in the last volume. I think there are a lot of Goodrichs that at one time were Goodridges. I have a deed of one of my ancestors where the name is spelled Goodrich and Goodridge in the same deed. I think this is what has made it so difficult to find the origin of our Virginia Goodridges.
