For certain, William Goodrich of Watertown was not son of Richard Goodrich and Muriel Eure. Though they had a son William, that particular William was too old to be the Watertown William, plus he remained in England, married in about 1614 to Sarah the daughter of William Bellingham. Her brother Richard Bellingham Esq. was Governor of Boston, New England, which fact is probably responsible for the mistaken conclusion that William Goodrich (of Richard & Muriel) was the Watertown chap.

William, son of Richard & Muriel, was a Lt. Col. In Cromwell’s Civil War, later purchased the manor at Walton Head and died in 1663 leaving a will dated 21 Sep 1662.

In the name of my blessed saviour Jesus Christ, Amen I William Goodricke of Walton Head in the County of York being (blessed be my god) in perfect health and memory do make this my last will and testament as followeth. First I give to my two daughters Sarah and Elizabeth each of them two hundred pounds a piece for their portion to be paid in convenient time after my decease And in the mean while to be allowed eleven pounds per Annum a piece for their maintenance. I give to my daughter Mary one hundred and six pounds due upon our bond from Mr. William Rooksby in November next, the said sum to be paid to her according to her wants and needs during her living with her husband Mathew Ewald as my executor shall think ( _?_ ). And if she survives him then the whole remainder to be paid to herself. And I give to my worthy Nephews Sir John Goodricke and Sir Francis Goodricke each of them one ring of memorial worth twenty shillings a piece. And I do hereby make my dear wife Sarah Goodricke and my worthy and best beloved son William Goodricke joint Executors of this my last will, be kind and careful one of another. Lastly I do hereby revoke all former wills whatsoever. Will Goodrick

The fact William named his worthy nephews Sir John Goodricke and Sir Francis Goodricke would indicate William of Walton Head was the brother of Sir Henry Goodricke of Ribston and thus the son of Richard Goodricke and Muriel Eure

Merton Taylor Goodrich did a piece on William of Watertown. You can find it on the NET. Merton claimed that William of Watertown came from Wolverstone. Merton seems to bank on the name of William's wife Margaret for that assumption. In his piece Merton says “all other William Goodriches in the Bury-Saint Edmund area were excluded as being the William of Watertown” without presenting any evidence for any of those exclusions. So his claim that William Goodrich from Wolverstone ended up in Watertown, Mass. would go unchallenged on that basis.

Consider this: John Goodrich clothier of Bury-Saint Edmunds who married Margerie Howe and was the progenitor of the Wethersfield Goodrich brothers John and William left a will (1636) naming sons William the elder (17 yrs old when he entered college in 1634), William the younger (~1621). Jeremy (who later died) and John. His son John named his eldest son Joseph. John the clothier also named a nephew William son of his brother Henry. Your William Goodrich of Watertown named children William, Mary, Jeremy, Joseph & Benjamin.

So with the names Jeremy & Joseph common to William of Watertown and William of Wethersfield why couldn’t William of Watertown be the William named in John the clothier's 1632 will as son of his brother Henry. Did the full cousins John, son of John Goodrich and Margerie Howe, and William, son of Henry, first come to Watertown and then later did John move to Wethersfield to join his brother William the younger?
