Hugh Goodman’s birth date was ascertained from U.S. Census records. He is listed in the 1850 U.S. Census as living in Linn Co., Mo. with his mother, Catherine, and children John, Enoch and William. No wife is listed and it is probable that she had -died sometime after the birth of William, then aged 3. The Census lists Hugh's birthplace as Missouri; his father was born in Kentucky and his mother in Tennessee according to the same data.
Hugh soon remarried. His second wife was Minerva Brinegar who also lived in Linn County with her large family. Children; Wesley and James were born in Missouri; Mary in the then Washington Territory about 1868; Benjamin back in Missouri in 1872. Both Rowland and Milton were born in Oregon (in 1876 and 1879 respectively). The Goodman family obviously migrated West at least two times. The first may have been in 1864 when a party of Goodman s, Brinegars, and Flournoys crossed the plains for Oregon, according to the 1931 obituary of Amanda T. Goodman. Their second crossing of the plains would have been between 1873 and 1875.
The 1880 U.S. Census found the Goodman family in Douglas County, Ore.They lived on a series of farms in Lookingglass and Coles Valleys. Hugh was then 59 and lived on a farm with Minerva as well with James Goodman (and his wife Laura) and Mary, Rowland. Benjamin, and Milton. Living on-the next-door farm were his son Wesley Charles Goodman and wife Mary Esther. Another of Hugh's sons, William, lived on a nearby farm in the Lookingglass Valley, while Enoch Goodman lived in Coles Valley.
The 1900 U.S. Census found Minerva living with her son Wesley Charles, which would indicate that Hugh had died sometime prior to 1900.
