Hi Sharon,
Have just seen your message. If you log on to www.genuki.org.uk/big/engDUR/GreatFire/Victims5.html and enter 'Goodman' you will see reference to Thomas Goodman who was injured in the Great Fire of Gateshead (some 8 miles from Jarrow) on 6th October 1854. Thomas was then living at Church Walk, Gateshead aged 44 years. He died in Gateshead Workhouse 7th November, 1870 and he was described as a Jobbing Labourer. My Great grandfather was James Goodman born in Ireland in about 1831(though where I have yet to discover).I have been trying to establish the connection between my Gt.grandfather and Thomas but have so far failed. I know that James lived in Cannon Street, Gateshead in 1872 and sometime afterwards moved into Church Walk though whether that was the same house as Thomas I cannot say nor can I say whether James had any brothers or sisters for that matter which, were it so, could tie in with your John. On the 1861 census Thomas is described as being 50 and a Widower with a lodger named Thomas Mcmahon aged 19 also at that address. I hope this helps rather than hinders you.
Sincerely, Jean (Leighton)(neeGoodman)
