G. Brown Goode did a very good job with his book, VA Cousins, but, like anyone else, he made mistakes. He admits in the book he was not sure where Edward should go so he made an assumption and placed him as a son of Samuel. However, it was probably the worst mistake he could have made. And soon after the book was released he started getting letters from Edward descendants at Skinquarter who were very upset by this mistake. In the files in the VA library in Richmond is a box with many letters complaining to him. He was going to fix the error but died before he could do so. So it is our job, the follow-on researchers, to look at data he did not have access to, and correct his errors. I'm sure that is what he would want us to do. But we are also human and also prone to errors, so hopefully someone in the future can fix what we do wrong. The House of Goode is a good book also but is limited in its coverage. One should always use these books as a guide and do one's own research. Who knows, you may discover the so-called smoking gun that reveals the whole truth on the Good/Goode Family. What we are trying to do is write a comprehensive set of books on the lineage of two immigrant lines of the Goode Family, not just restricted to OUR family line. I'm a descendant of both lines thru a Goode to Goode marriage in KY in early 1800. That's why I have tackled both. Send me what you have from James Clark Goode down and let me compare with what I have. Most people who have walked their line back from themselves have a better knowledge of true data than an outsider looking up the data in reference material. If you are interested in the book on John Goode of Whitby, let me know.
