Amanda:Richard and Eliza Jane's children did not include a Hugh, and Hugh is not a given name that I have encountered so far in my search. (My Richard did have a father and a brother named Edward, however.) My Goodchild ancestors came directly to New York City from County Cork in Ireland.I don't know how long they lived in Ireland, but they obviously came there from England at some point.(Hales, Wagner and Clerke of Co. Cork are among my ancestors.)
Hamish Solomons has Goodchild ancestors with a connection to Sri Lanka (Ceylon). His Goodchild ancestors came from Waterford, Co. Waterford, Ireland, and it appears at this point that they were related somehow to my ancestors of County Cork.I think you should peruse Hamish's recent Genforum query under "other countries, Ireland" to get a feel for the given names of his Sri Lanka Goodchilds.
It would be of great interest if you could pinpoint some connection in Ireland for your Goodchild family, because there were very few people of that name in Ireland and therefore a good chance that, if there is an Ireland connection, there may be some relationship somewhere.
I can send you an e-mail giving more information about my Goodchilds of New York City, if you are interested.I do know that some of the Co. Waterford Goodchilds had connections to England, but I don't think that it was Wiltshire.
