Hi JoI am replying to your message of Dec. 2002. An explanation of the change of names is needed before supplying info that I have.I've been researchingthe Gutchell surname in Vermont with connections to Clinton, Co., NY. Imagine an English speaking person hearing a Frenchman who translate his
name to to English meaning. Gutchell > Godchild > Goodchild > Bonenfant (which means good child).
My sources are listings of church records, GenForum,Clinton,NY and Rootsweb.com
Elisabeth b 1846-5-11; Felix b 1854-9-8; Jean Baptiste
b 1850-9-8; Marie Sophronie b 1848-9-22; William
b 1852-10-30; all children of Jean Bonenfant and Marie Gagnier at St-Joseph-du-Corbeau, Coopersville,NY. Jean Baptiste Bonenfant married Virginie Ganier, a minor, on 12-Oct-1844 also at SJdC in Coopersville,NY. The parents of Jean-Baptiste Bonenfant were Michel Bonenfant and Marie Anne Pelletier, married on 13 Jan 1794 at St-Michel, Yamaska, QC.
Michel's parents were Augustin Bonenfant and Marie-Jeanne Petit-Gobin married on 5 May 1766 also at St-Michel, Yamaska, QC. Augustin's parents were André Bonenfant and Louise Richard-Vaillarde married on 4 Feb 1732 at Neuville,
Portneuf, QC. Info from Mgr. Tanguay's 'Dictionnaire Généalogique Des Familles Canadiennes states that André was the son of René Bonenfant and Marie Bonin from St-Nicolas,
ville (city or town) of Fontenoi-le Comte, diocese of Poitiers in France. Tanguay has place of marriage of André as Pointe-aux-Trembles, Q. Pte-aux Trembles and Neuville are the same place which is about 30 miles southwest of Québec city in Canada. A note of caution. Pointe-aux-Trembles today is also an part of Montral, QC and not the same place. Another variation on the name is Godcharles.
Hope this helps.
