I am looking for any information (marriage, land, probate, census, military, etc.) on the families and ancestors of Manuel Gonzales[z] and Juana Chavez[s] in New Mexico. There is indication that Juana Chavez was a child bride at the time she had her first son, Damacio. Manuel may have been about five to ten years older than Juana. Manuel 'Gonsales', his wife Juana, his sons, Damasio and Bernardo are listed in the 1870 census listing for the Jarales Precinct (p. 2). They are listed in the 1880 Arizona census record in the St. Johns Precinct along with two other children, Federico and Adelaida. Both records list Manuel and Juana's birthplace as New Mexico. This is all I have to go on: (From the Tome Baptisms) GONSALES, Jose Damacio bap. 12 Dec 1856, age 2 days S/o Manuel GONSALES & M^a Juana CHAVES, gp/ Pablo CHAVES & M^a de la Lus TRUJILLO. (It does not state which township) GONZALES, Jose Bernardo - of Manzano bap. 22 Aug 1861, b. 20 Aug; s/o Manuel GONZALES & Juana CHAVES, gp/ Ramon MONTOYA & M^a de la Luz TORRES. GONZALES, Raymundo - of El Chato bap. 08 Jul 1863, b. 27 May; s/o Manuel GONZALES & Juana CHAVES, gp/ Ramon CISNEROS & Dolores VALLEJOS. GONZALES, Bonifacio - of C. (Casa) Colorado bap. 27 May 1868, b. 22 May; s/o Manuel GONZALES & Juana CHAVES, gp/ Desiderio PINO & M^a Belen PADILLA. (Raymundo and Bonifacio are not listed in the 1870 NM census, nor the 1880 AZ census. They may have died before 1870. There might be a family link to Pablo Chavez. There are no Gonzales relatives listed in any of these baptisms.) There is a possibility Manuel Gonzales died at Fort Apache in December of 1880. There is a transcription error for the Fort Apache internment listings. The actual records look like they state "Manuel Gonzales, a citizen". I do wonder if Manuel Gonzales served during the Civil War or the Indian Campaigns. His son Bernardo died in 1931 in St. Johns, and his death entry states that Bernardo was possibly from Canada Alamosa, NM - if this is any indication to the chance his father, Manuel Gonzales did serve in some military capacity or helped build or supply any of the forts. Juana Chavez remarried to Felipe Gonzales in St. Johns, AZ in 1890. Felipe was the widower of Dolores Luna. Could have Manuel and Felipe been related to each other? I don't really know. I estimate that Manuel Gonzales and Juana Chavez married 1853 between 1856. Juana may have been around 10 to 13 years old when she got married. I estimate Manuel was born between 1820 and 1840, and Juana was born between 1830 and 1847. Any help on finding earlier records on Manuel Gonzales and Juana Chavez would be greatly appreciated! Military possibilities are of interest as well. Thanks! Clarissa Notify Administrator about this message?
