I am the Great Great Grandson of Mr. Willam Gollan Of Inverness, Scotland. I have been researching both his ancestors and decendants. The following is what I have found out to date. I hope it is of assistance to you. William Gollan was born 1791 in Inverness Scotland and died Feb 6, 1883 in Woodburn, NSW. He is the son of William Gollan, a farmer of Inveness, and Mary McDonald, also of Inverness. William married Jannet(Janet) McBarrnett (or McBennett?) around 1828 in Inverness Scotland. Janet's parents were James McBarnnett and Maggy MacIntosh. Janet was born in Banenoch, Scotland in 1809. She died in Sydney on April 10, 1869 after a long illness. They had the following children in Scotland:- Mary - born 1829, died 1899 in Ballina NSW William - born 1831, died July 27, 1907 in Woodburn NSW James - born 1832, died 1885 in Wooburn NSW John - born 1834 Charles - born 1837 (Died 1838 during voyage to Australia) Janet born 1838 They also had the following children born in the Shoalhaven district of NSW where they lived until the 1860's when the family travelled by coastal steamer to Iluka and then trekked to the Richmond River District of NSW were they took land and settled. Elizabeth born 1840, died 1922 Jessy born 1843 George born 1845, died 30 June, 1938 Robert born 29 September, 1847, died 8 August, 1929 Isabella Born 1853. It is difficult to piece together as there is so many common names ie William, John, James !!! My research indicates that William and Jannet were the first Gollan family to arrive in Australia. They departed Scotland on September 17, 1838 on board the "Asia" and arrived into Sydney 10 May, 1839. Subsequent families were: John (37) and Margaret(36) Gollan with children Hector (10), Roderick (8), Thomas (4) and Margaret (2) on Board the "Telegraph" arriving 1853. Thomas (57 yrs) and Catherine (46 yrs) Gollan with children Roderick (20), Catherine (18), John(14), Helen (12) and Thomas (10) on board the "Nabob" arriving in 1855 Ronald and Margaret (30) Gollan with child Jessie (1) on board the "Vocalist" arriving 1856. Also listed individually are Mary Gollan (15) on board the "Irving" arriving 1857 and James Gollan (17) on board the "Wanata" arriving 1864. Relationship between familes is unkown at this time. Marriages of the William and Jannett children (subject to confirmation) are as follows:- Mary married Charles Webb William married Mary ?? James married Sarah Lammond about 1850 John Rebecca Monaghan Janet ?? still searching Elizabeth married Martin Campbell abt. 1869 Jessy married John Monaghan 1867 George married Eliza Upton 1866 Robert married Eliza Baker 1875 Isabella married John Allen 1880 I descended from William & Jannett / Robert & Eliza. Robert owned a property called "Dungarubba Station" part of which is still in the Gollan family today. I hope this helps. Regards, Garth
