Nadyne,
CULCHETH GOLIGHTLY of Charles Town, SC was a son of ROBERT GOLIGHTLY and DOROTHY FENWICK (married 22 October 1699, Ryton, County Durham, England): IGI Index, Batch #A457373, Serial Sheet #1856. They had children 7 children; ANN, C. 12 June 1701, FENWICK, C. 05 May, 1702, DOROTHY, C. O2 May 1704, CULCHETH, C. 07 November 1706, ROBERT, C. 26 February 1708, DOROTHY, C. 06 July 1709, & MARY, C. 21 September 1710. All these children were christened in Newsastle Upon Tyne, St. Nicholas Parish Register. You will note that there were 2 daughters named DOROTHY. It may be that the DOROTHY christened in 1704 may have died young.
The Honorable JOHN FENWICK of Charles Town, SC. namedCULCHETH GOLIGHTLY as his nephew in his will dated 27th Feb. 1745-6 and proved in London, 2 July 1747.
CULCHETH GOLIGHTLY died in South Carolina in 1749. He arrived in SC by 31 January 1733. He first lived on John's Island. He later owned plantations at Horseshoe Savannah in St. Barthlomew Parish and a plantation on Charleston Neck. He named his 2 daughter as co-heiresses of his property.
The above mentioned daughter were:
1. MARY GOLIGHTLY who married MAJ. BENJAMIN HUGER, "killed in front of Charlestown in 1779."
2. DOROTHY GOLIGHTLY who married WILLIAM HENRY DRAYTON, who was a member of the Continental Congress in Philadelphia. He died and was buried in Philadelphia in 1779. Their son, JOHN DRAYTON, b, June 22, 1766 in "Drayton Hall", was Governor of South Carolina, 1800-1802 and 1808-1810.
The MARY GOLIGHTLY (her 3rd. marriage) who married COL. HENRY HYRNE June 20th 1759 (his 3rd. marriage) was MARY BUTLER ELLIOTT GOLIGHTLY, Widow of CULCHETH GOLIGHTLY. She was married first to THOMAS ELLIOTT who died in 1738. 2nd. to CULCHETH GOLIGHTLY and 3rd. to COL. HENRY HYRNE. MARY BUTLER ELLIOTT GOLIGHTLY HYRNE was the daughter of RICHARD BUTLER.
CULCHETH GOLIGHTLY was a member of the House of Representatives of South Carolina for several years until his death in 1749. It remains to be seen if he was any relation to our GOLIGHTLY family or not. His first name CULCHETH comes from his FENWICK GRANDMOTHER , ANN CULCHETH who married ROBERT FENWICK. HON. JOHN FENWICK of South Carolina (uncle of CULCHETCH GOLIGHTLY) was the youngest son of ROBERT FENWICK and ANN CULCHETH according to SOUTH CAROLINA GENEALOGIES.
The FENWICKS and CULCHETH families were old prominent families of COUNTY NORTHUMBERLAND, ENGLAND. The GOLIGHTLY family has also been recorded in COUNTY NORTHUMBERLAND, ENGLAND since the 1500's or earlier. In all probablity, our earliest known GOLIGHTLY ancestor, JOHN (I) GOLIGHTLY, came to VIRGINA by 1688 was from NORTHUMBERLAND OR DURHAM COUNTY, ENGLAND. There were several JOHN GOLIGHTLYS born in the proper time frame to have been our ancestor. The question is, WHICH one.
Hope this helps,
Norma Wilson
