Linda
Are you familiar with the supposed Melungeon connection for Goins? A supposed tri racial isolate found in the Appalacians about the time of Daniel Boone. It is supposed they were originally connected with the lost colony at Roanoke, or even earlier from a Portugese shipwreck. The people found in the mountains were dark with straight hair and some blue eyes, lived in cabins, wore familiar clothes and spoke Elizabethan English and said they were "Portegee".
