Hi, Linda,
Thank you so much for your reply. Was the "Going" family Indian or were they black? I know that I have other family records where one child would be listed as mulatto and the others as white, simply because she showed her Indian heritage.
Our Tombs/Garvin family has always been white as far back as memory and photos go. We have pictures of several children of the Tombs boy on the list. They are all white, though some have a definite Indian look.
Do you think that the Tombs children's mother, Jane Garvin, could actually have been a Going? The three children were listed on the original newspaper article between two "Going" families. I have not been able to find any Garvins in Columbia County that could be Jane Garvin's relatives.
I have been in contact with the courthouse in Columbia County. They say there is a minute book available for that time period (1819), but it is not indexed. The record posted on the internet says that the original record could contain racial composition as well as guardian names and perhaps family relationships. Have you seen the book? Do you know of any researchers in Columbia County?
Thanks again for your reply and for the helpful information that you gave. Mary
