Shirley,
Thanks for the response! This whole Goforth family is one confusing family for sure!
Delia Goforth, age 49, and her children, Sherfield 22, Eliza 17, Elvira 16, Riley 14, twin girls Mahulda and Maranda age 13, Jensey age 11 are living between the family of King Hiram Albes and the William Goforth family on the 1850 Census of Wayne County, TN.My gr-gr-grandfather was Thomas Jefferson Goforth born 1846.There is a male "J" Goforth age 4 living in this William Goforth household. Is this male "J" the Thomas Jefferson Goforth I am searching for?I have not found Thomas Jefferson Goforth with any of his siblings in the 1850 or 1860 census records in any state.Thomas Jefferson Goforth's siblings were Jerry Monroe, James (aka Jim, who drowned), John, Joseph, and his sister Hulda Goforth Gambrels Hopper.
Riley Goforth can be tracked from Wayne County, TN in 1850, 1860, 1870 to Little Prairie, Pemiscot County, Missouri in 1880 to Greene County, Arkansas in 1890, 1900, 1910 until his death in 1917.
Thomas Jefferson Goforth's brother, Jerry Monroe Goforth married Sarah Ann Ables, sister of King Hiram Ables. The Ables and the Goforths can be found on the 1860 & 1870 census of Ballard County, Kentucky.
Riley Goforth ended up in Greene County, Arkansas and died there in 1917.Riley's death certificate lists his father as "Umphrey" Goforth. My gr-gr-grandfather, Thomas Jefferson Goforth went from Ballard County, Kentucky, to Lauderdale County, Tennessee, to Greene County, Arkansas and died there in 1917, however, there is no death certificate, so the name of his father still remains uncertain.Thomas Jefferson Goforth's sister, Hulda Goforth Gambrel Hopper also went to Greene County and Craighead County, Arkansas, lived with her daughter Alice Hopper Cobb and died there after the 1910 census.
Did Riley Goforth born 1835 and Thomas Jefferson Goforth born 1846 know each other? Were they cousins? Is Riley Goforth the son of Delia and Humphrey Goforth? Was Delia the first wife of Humphrey Goforth? What is Delia's maiden name?Could her maiden name be Sherfield? Why would she name her son, Sherfield?Sounds like a family name?
As usual, there are more questions than answers with this line of Goforths. If anyone has any additional information that might help piece this puzzle together, I would be forever grateful...thanks again for your response, Shirley...
Best Regards,
Barbara (Goforth)Fitzwater
