I'm helping with the ancestry of my cousin, descendant of
Deborah GOFF (1800 - 1825, Dennis, Cape May, NJ) & James BENNETT.Deborah was dau/o
Daniel GOFF (1778 - 1856) & Sarah BISHOP.Daniel was son of
David GOFF (ca. 1740 - 1792, inventory 3 Jan. 1793) & Mary. David was son of
John GOFF (ca. 1702, NJ - 1761) & Mary.
Has anyone discovered proof of the wife of the first John GOFF of Cape May Co., NJ?I'm working on the hypothesis that she might have been Ann EDWARDS, who m. 22 May 1701, East Hampton, Suffolk (Long Island), NY, John GOFF. Then, John GOFF had children, all baptized at East Hampton, 23 Apr. 1710: Ann, Hannah, John, Joseph, & Wm. [FamilySearch.org].Could John & Ann have gone back to the mother's birthplace for the baptisms?
I do not know the parents of Ann EDWARDS, but there was a large family at East Hampton descended from William EDWARDS [will pr. 21 Oct. 1685] & Ann, who had John, Thomas, Elizabeth, Hannah, Sarah, & Ann. The will of William EDWARDS named wf. Ann, son John and his sons Josiah & Wm.; son Thomas & his sons Ephraim & Wm.; daus. Ann SQUIRE & Elizabeth STRATTON BAKER.
Some say that the Ann who m. 1701, John GOFF was dau/o John EDWARDS & Mary STANBOROUGH. C. A. TORREY's New England Marriages to 1700 says John & Mary had children b. 1666, 1668, 1670.Other records say the children of John EDWARDS & Mary were William, Josiah, Mary, John, Margaret, & Sarah (b. ca. 1684, m. 1702, Jas. STANBOROUGH, who must have been a cousin).
There is a gap between the births of John (1678 - 1728) & Margaret (1682 - 1703) so that Ann could have been born 1679 - 1681.John supposedly left a will, but current researchers cannot find it.
The names of the residents of Cape May named EDWARDS seem to fit.Ephraim EDWARDS sold two tracts in East Hampton in 1701; on 8 Sep. 1701, wf. Sarah released dower and Thomas EDWARDS quit-claimed.Ephraim was named tax collector in 1713, Cape May, and his estate was proved there 2 Jan. 1715/6. Another Ephraim EDWARDS registered his cattle mark in Cape May in 1725.Josiah EDWARDS owned land in Cape May in 1733, & Ephraim EDWARDS in 1737.In 1752, those who formed the group to purchase rights of the West [New] Jersey Society included James, Ephraim, & Josiah EDWARDS.
Does anyone have any other clues?
