Petition 20682814 Details Location: Laurens, Georgia Salutation: To the honorable the Superior Court of the Court aforesaid Filing Court and Date: Superior, circa 1828 Ending Court and Date: Superior, 1829-April-8 ---------------------------------------------- General Petition Information Abstract: John Anderson informs the court that his wife, Elizabeth Anderson, “whilst Sole and unmarried,” was “lawfully possessed as her own property of a certain negro man Slave named William,” valued at $1,000. Elizabeth "casually lost" said slave, who came into the possession of William Goff. The Andersons allege that Goff knew William “to be the property of your petitioner the said Elizabeth,” yet he has refused to return the slave and has subsequently "converted and disposed the Said negro man Slave to his own use." The Andersons sue for $1,500 in damages.
