Fred, I checked again on my John Gowey with no dates and found that his father was Floriand(d) Gowey born 1845..to late to be yours. I also went through my large Gowey file and found nothing that would be your John Gowey. You do know that Gowey was pronounced with a hard H and that is why my Goweys in the Vermont census are listed as Hoe.
