Thomas BROWN & Dorcas GOE of Fayette Co., PA
I am trying to track down an ancestor named Thomas Brown from Fayette County, PA.
I am testing out the theory that my Thomas Brown may have been the son of Thomas Brown (1755-1827, son of Basil Brown & Elizabeth Brashears) and Dorcas Goe.Does anyone out there have any information on when Thomas & Dorcus's son Thomas was born, and who he may have married? If not, does anyone have any suggestions for me as to where to look for marriage or baptismal records that might shed some light on my problem ancestor? (E.g., are there church records from that are still in existence somewhere?)
As background, my Thomas Brown was an innkeeper in Henry Clay Township from the 1820s into the 1850s.A county history suggests that he came from a "family of innkeepers."The 1850 census shows that he was born circa 1783 (although I suspect that date may be off a bit) in Pennsylvania, and owned 6,000 acres.I'm still in the process of sorting through the land records, but it appears that the only Thomas Brown who owned that kind of land in Henry Clay was a "Thomas Brown, Jr." (no middle initial given).I also know that a number of folks from the Thomas/Basil Brown of Brownsville lines had tavern licenses, which makes me suspect there might be a link.
My Thomas Brown had children Mary Jane (b. abt. 1815, m. abt 1832-33 ), John J., Robert, Thomas John, Beeson, Jacob (b. abt 1827), Anna Belle M. (b. abt 1831),and Julie (b. abt 1833), but I have had no luck finding any marriage records for him.
The 1850s census does not list any household members old enough to have been Thomas's wife, so I am assuming that she (or perhaps more than one wife) died prior to that, and of course, prior censuses only gave the name of the head of household.I am not sure what church the family belonged to.
Thanks so much,
