I am currently working on a project involving 18th century actor and dancer James Verling Godwin. Godwin's extensive work on the American stage is well documented in period newspapers but little is known of his personal life.
I know that he married his second wife, actress Sarah TOWNSEND (?-1791) of Charleston South Carolina in April 1785. Sarah died in Richmond, Virginia in March 1791. I do not know if they had any children. James' trail runs cold after the last newspaper references find him in Augusta and Savannah Georgia in 1796. It is thought that he moved to North Carolina where he probably died.
I'm basically looking for any personal information that might help make some sense of his professional life. His birth year is unknown although I suspect he was originally from England. His death date is also unknown. At this point any scrap of information would be useful!
