Thomas Godwin b. VA abt 1840 killed in CA 1876

I am trying to find info on the family/descendants of Thomas H. Godwin. He was born in Virginia about 1840. On Dec. 1, 1863, in Los Angeles, he married Jeanette B. Shackelford (b. Grayson, TX Nov. 26, 1847). They were in the 1870 census for Tehachapi, Kern County, California, with children Mahala (5), Henry (3), and Amanda (5 mos.).

Thomas was a local constable and had to kill a man that was resisting arrest along with another man. The other man, James Hayes, later returned and killed Thomas. That was on Oct. 22, 1876.

Any info about Jeannette and the children would be appreciated, and also Thomas's parents names.

Thank you,
David Dyas
