I just started researching (today actually) these Godwins for a friend of mine. Here's what I found so far and you're going to be fascinated (if you haven't found the info already).

I found his WWI Draft Registration on ancestry.com which states that he was born 10-6-1895 in Lake City, SC. At the time, his mother, his wife and one child were living with him. This document is dated 6-5-1917. The 1920 census states (at least I think this is him):

Vernie B., wife, female, white, 21, married, b. SC, parents b. SC
Louis, son, male, white, 2, b. SC, parents b. SC
Sarah R., daughter, female, white, 2 months, b. SC, parents b. SC
Anjamima, mother, female, white, 51, widow, b. SC, parents b. SC
Leland, brother, male, white, 16, b. SC, parents b. SC

The 1910 census states:
1910 Williamsburg Co., SC, Lake, District 113
Samuel T. Godwin, male, white, 43, first marriage, married 22 years, b. SC, parents b. SC, proprietor of saw mill
Minnie, wife, female, white, 41, first marriage, married 22 years, had 9 children 5 living, b. SC, parents b. SC
Eva, daughter, female, white, 21, single, b. SC, parents b. SC
Samuel, Jr., son, male, white, 11, b. SC, parents b. SC
Leila, daughter, female, white, 9, b. SC, parents b. SC
Leland, son, male, white, 6, b. SC, parents b. SC
Gladys, daughter, female, white, 3, b. SC, parents b. SC
William Belk, laborer, male, white, 20, single, b. SC, parents b. SC, driver of log cart
George T. Clark, boarder, male, white, 32, first marriage, married 8 years, b. SC, parents b. SC, manager of bowling alley

The 1900 census states:
1900 Williamsburg Co., SC, Lake, District 118
Samuel T. Godwin, white male, b. Oct. 1866, 33, married, married 12 years, b. SC, parents b. SC, farmer
Anjamima, wife, white female, b. Feb. 1870, 30, married, married 12 years, had 3 children 3 living, b. SC, parents b. SC
Annie E., daughter, white female, b. Nov. 1889, 10, b. SC, parents b. SC
Samuel T., Jr., son, white male, b. May 1895, 5, b. SC, parents b. SC
Leila, daughter, white female, b. Aug. 1896, 3, b. SC, parents b. SC

Samuel Thaddeus Godwin, Sr. (Thatis as his father spelled it in the family Bible) was the son of Samuel Cooper Godwin and Hester Ann Kennedy. Samuel Cooper Godwin was my friend's gr-gr-grandfather (and also your gr-gr-grandfather). This man was very important to the State of South Carolina, as he not only signed the Ordinance of Succession which caused the Civil War (along with my husband's ancestor, Gen. Paul Quattlebaum), but he was also present at the McLean home in Appomatox, VA when General Robert E. Lee surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant. This has been confirmed by the curator of the Appomattox Museum. My friend has a recent e-mail from him stating this. My friend is in possession of Samuel Cooper Godwin's Bible. He kept detailed information regarding his family and military service. His Civil War uniform, which has remained in the family, is now being searched for in the attics of her aunts' and cousins' houses in light of the recent discoveries concerning his military service.

Samuel Cooper Godwin (9-1-1845 Williamsburg Co., SC/8-17-1915 Williamsburg Co., SC) was the son of Hardy Garland Bethel Godwin (1-31-1810 NC/10-16-1851 Williamsburg Co., SC and Margaret McCutchen (c. 1811/bef. 1870 Williamsburg Co., SC). She was the daughter of James McCutchen and Elizabeth McCants. Hardy Godwin was the son of Jacob Godwin and ?. Hardy and Margaret married 3-26-1833 in Williamsburg Co., SC.

Here's my friend's line:

Samuel Cooper Godwin, through his son William James Godwin (brother of Samuel Thaddeus Godwin, Sr.), through his son Lonnie Huron Godwin who was her mother's father.

I have a lot more in case you're interested. I'd certainly love to hear from you, as you are definitely related to my friend!! :o)

Sincerely,
Dana Risinger
West Columbia, SC
