It has been many yrs since I did genealogy, but now retired so perhaps more time. Simon {Szymon)Gmerek lived at 111 Lopere at the time of 1900 U.S. Census. House is still standing on the corner of St. Stanislaus St. My father was born there in 1894. The family attended St. Adalbert's church around the corner. If you look at the 1900 Census you will find that Simon's brothers also lived on Lopere St; you would probably find your grandfather at 118.
Interesting note: When Simon established a dairy farm on corner of Harlow and Seven Day Roads in Darien Center, NY his 3 or 4 oldest children remained in Buffalo Polonia. The descendants of these older children maintained the Gmerek spelling. I believe my father may have added the extra "e" sometime around 1918 after Simon died in 1916. My father, Stanley William G, was the oldest child on the farm. Descendants of the kids on the farm now have the Gemerek spelling. Interested in more?
