I'm going to follow up myself!

Here are some new facts. One of the articles that mentions Mary Glidden in the NEHGS database was an obituary of a descendant who had been an NEHGS member. The obituary stated that John Rollins was born in 1701. That conflicts with the 1682 and 1692 dates that appear in other sources, but works better with the ages of his wives. The person who had died was descended from son Benjamin Rollins and thought his mother was Mary Savary. If that is right, then that means that John could not have married Mary Glidden before 1734. Of course, there are no references listed.

There are websites operating now that mention the next child, Jane Rollins, who married John Hussey.

This one says that Jane was the daughter of Mary Glidden. It repeats the birth date of 1701 for John Rollins and states that Mary Glidden was born in 1705. As noted previously, these dates work better with their chronology, but alas, I did not see references for them.

Things could not be simple, of course. This site shows Jane as the daughter of John Rollins and his first wife, Mary Savony (Savary)

So apparently, there is not a consensus on Jane's parentage.

If Mary Glidden connects to the Gliddens of Damariscotta, it would make sense that she married John after he moved to that area. Earl has a reference that says that he arrived in Damariscotta by 1736. So the following timeline seems possible. John Rollins and his first wife Mary moved to Damariscotta in 1736. She had Jane and died. He married (quickly because he had several very young children) Mary Glidden of Damariscotta. The next child arrived in 1738.

Other scenarios are possible, but this might be a good one to work from for the time being.

I'm thinking of leaving a message on the Rollins genforum asking for children of John Rollins and his wives to contact us. We have three children covered between us. Maybe descendants of the other children will know something useful.

Like I said above, this may take years, but that's okay.

I'll write again if anything new turns up. I hope you will share your thoughts about these possibilities.

Charlene
