Hi, Earl.

Thanks so much for your response. Thanks so much for the e-mail message with all the documentation. I did not have any of that.

I don't think there is much point in contacting Doris because I think she is the one who wrote me a few days ago and said there was nothing about our Mary Glidden or John Rollins in the new Glidden book. But she pointed out that this does not mean that Mary was not part of this family. There were three branches of the family and this book only concentrates on one--Richard I believe. So Mary could be descended from Richard's brothers or uncles (and I think he did have some) and not be in the book.

Just as a point of discussion, as you say, there is a lot of information on John Rollins, but not much on his wives. For example, the date of his marriage to Mary Savary is not proven, her death date is unknown, his marriage date to Mary Glidden is unknown, her parents are unknown, etc. Maggie thought Mary Glidden and John were married in 1738, but at least one of Jane Rollins's descendants thinks Mary Glidden was Jane's mother. Jane was born in 1736, so that spoils that scenario. Mary Glidden's death date has been purported to be 1753, but no one cites any evidence supporting that.

Also, some of the "facts" that have been passed down about Mary Glidden cannot be true. For example, as you have pointed out, it is physiologically impossible for Mary Glidden to have been the mother of Joseph Rollins, b. 1753 and also to have been born in 1692. I will go out on a limb and say that it is impossible that Mary gave birth to Joseph at age 61. So either Mary wasn't born in 1692 or she wasn't Joseph's mother. If she were born in 1692, she could not reasonably have been the mother of any of the children born after 1742. Yet, several sources seem to indicate that she was. If one fact or the other has to be jettisoned, then it seems as though the "fact" that she was born in 1692 is easier to reject (although there is a small chance that could be wrong and the true fact is that she is not the mother of the later children). But the more reasonable conclusion is that any Mary Glidden who was born in 1692 is unlikely to be the one who married John Rollins.

Even some facts about John are questionable. For example, if he was married four times to women whose names are known, when did he have the opportunity to marry this Sarah Souter in some other place?

I think it would be worthwile to collect more facts that might help sift through the information and misinformation that exists about Mary Glidden. I'm hoping that if we can figure out when she married John Rollins (which is partly dependent on the date his first wife died) then we might be able to assign her an age and place her with a potential Glidden family. That's why I went through the list of John Rollins's kids in the other posting. Also, there may be land records where one of Mary's Glidden relatives gave them land, or served as a witness that might give clues to her identity. The two marriages her children made with the Chapman family may indicate a more extensive relationship with them. All of this seems worth following up, which I hope to do.

I will be glad to share anything that turns up here. Thanks again for sharing the documentation with me.

Charlene
