In an attempt to locate the parents and siblings of Betsey Glidden [b. abt 1810; d. 29 Mar 1842], who married James Locke abt 1829, I have collected information below and have drawn a conclusion. If anybody can add support or refute my conclusion, it would be appreciated. A friend who had a copy of the "Descendants of Charles Glidden" book stated that five children are recorded to Levi Glidden in Unity, Cheshire Co., NH 1799-1807: Maria, b Mar 7, 1799; Bemsley, b Feb. 18,1801; Molly, b Aug 16, 1803; Sebea,b July 13, 1805; Pottle (his grandmother Glidden's maiden name), b May 28, 1807, d May 24,1820; and Stephen, b Sept 15, 1820. An unreferenced biographical sketch [also provided by the same friend] of Stephen Glidden states that: He and his sister, Margaret, the widow of Ransler Jenkins of Maquoketa, IA, are the sole survivors of a family of eleven." It goes on to say that his family moved from NH to New York in 1821 and settled in Crown Point, Essex County, NY. Stephen, at age 15, went to Vermont to live with his brother-in-law, and soon became dissatisfied and made up his mind to settle in the west, but not immediately. He Returned to Crown Point at age 19, the place where his father also died. Stephen arrived in Joliet, IL on Sept. 3, 1848. His first work was with a brother-in-law, who had a contract to rebuild a mill at Treat's Island in Channahon Twp. Stephen bought the mill and ran it for 5 yrs. In 1849, Stephen returned to Crown Point for is betrothed wife and married Miss Mary BARNETT, a daughter of Asa and Hannah (Lamson) Barnett. JMR comments: Mary Barnett, wife of Stephen Glidden was the sister of James H. Barnett, who married Laura Locke, sister of Amanda [Locke] Wallace, and d/o James Locke and Betsy Glidden. Laura and James are buried in the Tenhassen Cemetery, Martin County, MN. Amanda [Locke]Wallace is buried in the Armstrong Grove Cemetery, Armstrong, Iowa. An inspection of an 1862 Plat Map of Channahon Township, Will County, Illinois shows joint ownership of an island in the middle of the Des Plaines River, in the SW 1/4 of Section 11, with owners as Mills and S. Glidden as well as the 160 acres of the SE 1/4 of Section 11. Treat's island exists today, and is located in the middle of the Des Plaines River on the east side of I-55, just south of I-80. An inspection of the 1850 Federal census for Channahon Twp, shows Amanda Locke [age 16] and Laura Locke [age 20], enumerated in the "House of Mills". An personal inspection of the "Willard Grove Cemetery" in Channahon Twp, found a prominent bronze marker for the family of James and Eunice Mills, next to an identical marker for the family of Stephen Glidden. The calculated birth date from the marker of Stephen Glidden matches that quoted in the book "Descendants of Charles Glidden". An April 1946 letter written by Nina [Wallace] Bradford, d/o Amanda Locke and Wm Wallace stated: "Captain Locke was my mother's father and he married a Glidden girl. She died when my mother was three years old and Aunt Laura Barnett was seven. The Glidden brothers and sisters took my mother and raised her." And further it states: "When Father enlisted in the Civil War, Mother had five children--Ella, Lee, Laura, Will and Bessie. The latter died soon after he left. They lived near their uncle that had raised her and he give her the school, and she taught in her own house." An Affidavit, written by Stephen Glidden, to support Amanda's application for a widow's pension as a consequence of Wm Wallace's Civil War service, stated that he [Stephen Glidden] knew Amanda since she was born, and that Amanda and Wm had lived on his [Stephen Glidden's] land and were neighbors. Amanda [Locke] Wallace named her first born daughter, Eunice Eleanor [Ella] WALLACE, probably after the aunt, who raised Amanda after Amanda's mother died. This aunt is likely Eunice Mills, w/o James Mills. From the above I conclude that Levi and Sally Glidden had the following children: Maria, Bensley, Molly, Sebea, Pottle, Stephen, Eunice, Betsey, and Margaret.....for a family of eleven. If my conclusion above is accurate, Betsey [Glidden] Locke was the daughter of Levi Glidden and Sally Glidden. I do not know the relationship of Levi and Sally Glidden, prior to their marriage. Does anyone know?
