Hello Michael,

Like you I have my roots in Dundee.

My dad (William Low Glenday 1915-84) wore the Ancient MacLaren tartan, although I suspect that was because of some of his non-Glenday ancestors.

I think the origin of the surname comes from a place called Glen Dye, as our surname appears over 400 years ago as 'de Glendye'. I could find two places of the name - Firstly Glen Dye in Kincardineshire is about 8 miles long and runs south from Strachan to the border with Angus. Secondly there is a much smaller Glen Dye in Angus, about 4 miles north of Lintrathen. Went to see it and it was a bleak place! Hard to imagine anyone making a living from it.

I seem to remember seeing a list of Clerics or maybe Bishops in Brechin Cathedral which included someone surnamed 'de Glendy'. I think it referred to them being a cleric in Ireland several hundred years ago. Has anyone else seen this?

Regards,

David Glenday - davidglenday@aol.com
