Hi Deb,
Thanks for your interest in the Gleaves family.
I would be interested in any information you have on either Elizabeth “Betsy” Smith-Gleaves or Sarah “Sallie” Smith-Gleaves.I have suspected for some time, without proof that they could be sisters. It appears that at least Elizabeth is the daughter of Ezekial Smith.
With regard to the three Gleaves men you mentioned, Thomas and Matthew Sr. were sons of William Gleaves of Wythe County, VA.A family bible states that Matthew Sr. died on October 8, 1804.His is the will you reference.
Matthew Jr., who married Elizabeth Smith, was the son of William’s younger brother, Michael Gl(e)aves. The Sr. & Jr. titles were used to differentiate men with the same name even if they weren’t related.Usually, the Sr. title went to the older man, as in this case.
Rather than posting the info I have on all three men and the Smith women I would direct you to www.gleavesfamily.com.If you click on “Family Tree” it will bring up all of my research.
Matthew Jr. and Elizabeth Smith can be found in Chapter 4, beginning on page 91.Their children can be found in Chapter 9, page 394.
Thomas & Sarah Smith are in Chapter 3, beginning on page 38 and Matthew Sr. on page 46.
Hope this helps.
Dennis
