Obituary
Wayne Wheeler Fitzgerald, 88, Cynthiana, died Saturday, May 10, 2014 at Harrison Memorial Hospital.
He was born Sept. 21, 1925, in Hazard, Ky., to the late Cornelius John and Glenna Wheeler Fitzgerald. The family made Cynthiana their home in 1926.
He graduated from Cynthiana High School in 1943, enlisting in the Navy in June of the same year. He served in the South Pacific and the Admiralty Islands Islands as a motor mechanical mate until 1946. Upon his discharge from military service, he entered Cumberland School of Law, graduating in 1950. He opened his law practice on Pike Street in Cynthiana, where it remained for the duration of his career. He was elected and served as city attorney before serving as 18th Judicial District Judge from 1975 to 1989, the first person to hold that position.
He was a member of the local Elks Lodge #438, serving as Exalted Ruler from 1966 to 1968, and of Stephen B. Whalen American Legion Post #27, and was a member of Connersville Christian Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sally Glasscock Fitzgerald; his son, Mark Alan Fitzgerald; a daughter, Gina Renee Fitzgerald; brothers, Donald Lee Fitzgerald and Gerald Taylor Fitzgerald; and a sister, Obra Fitzgerald Buttry.
Survivors include: his daughters, Carol (Michael) Harney and Kelly (Charles) Sallengs, both of Cynthiana; eight grandchildren, Jesse (Angie) Withers, Winchester, Andrea (Bruce) Bennett, Nicholasville, Rachel (Danny) Ravencraft, Georgetown, Sarah Fitzgerald, Lexington, Alexander (Elise) Fitzgerald, Frankfort, and Kaleb (Tori) Sallengs, Katelyn Sallengs and Kirsten Sallengs, all of Cynthiana; six great-grandchildren, Wesley Ravencraft, Kyleigh Withers, BJ Bennett, Joshua Bennett, Wyatt Ravencraft and SallyKate Ravencraft; and two brothers, CJ (Bettie) Fitzgerald and William Fitzgerald, both of Florida.
Funeral services will be Friday, May 16 at 1 p.m. at Ware Funeral Home, conducted by Warren French. Visitation is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Burial will be in Battle Grove Cemetery.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Gina Fitzgerald Memorial Scholarship Fund at Kentucky Christian College, or Hospice of the Bluegrass.
