Alice Etrenne "Joy" Gade 1921 - 2014 Passed away peacefully at home on February 8th, 2014 at age 93, after a short illness. Joy was born in Bulawayo, Southern Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) on January 1st, 1921 to "Gay" Best and Hubert Best. At age 5, Joy went with her mother to Nuneaton, England. Joy completed her education in England and enlisted in the Womens Royal Naval Service at the start of WWII, rose to the rank of Lieutenant. On February 1st, 1947, Joy married "Dick" Gade, a film-maker. In 1948, the family emigrated to Vancouver, Canada. Joy was the mother of two and worked for the University of British Columbia until 1959, when the family emigrated to California settling in San Anselmo. Joy worked in various private schools, including Bransons and Dominican College, ending her working career at U.C. Irvine. Upon retirement, she and Dick, returned to San Anselmo and became world travelers. Joy and Dick helped establish the Friends of Music program at St. John's in Ross, where she was a member. Joy was a member of the Daughters of the British Empire and is President of Le Club Francais. Joy is survived by her children Richard Sommery-Gade and Anne Glasscock; her Grandchildren David Glasscock and Misty Schuler and Rick Gade; and her Great-Grandchildren Brodie Behnke, Breeanna Behnke, Aiden Glasscock and Brennan Schuler. A memorial service and celebration of her life will be held on Sunday, February 23rd, 2014 at 3:00 PM at St. John's Episcopal Church 14 Lagunitas Ave., Ross, Ca with a reception to follow at the church.
