William (Bill) Johnson, my great grandfather was born June 16, 1845.
He came from Kentucky and there is nothing known about his family
background. It is known however that he was a soldier in the Civil War and
was held in prison for some time. An old story has been told down through
the years, that while he was in prison another man was to be released but he
was very sick with a fever knew he was dying so he told Bill that when they
called his name for him to answer. So they changed identities and Bill was
released in the other man's place.
While in the Army, Bill and a group of soldiers on horse back stopped at
a spring near Spencer, Tennessee to water their horses. There was a young
girl at the spring washing clothes whose name was Tabitha Hooten. It was
love at first sight for her and Bill. He came back later and they were
married December 31, 1864 at Spencer in Van Buren County. Tabitha was
fourteen years old at the time being born September 28, 1850.
Bill and Tabitha settled in Overton County near Flat Creek and raised
eleven children. She was said to be part Indian and smoked a pipe. In
addition to her eleven children and one grandchild, her duties included,
spinning and weaving, making soap and cooking on an open fireplace. Bill
was a farmer and rock mason. He built many chimneys, one of which still
stands today (1991). It was built onto a log house owned by Forest Hoover
in the Allons community. This house is said to be one of the oldest houses
in Overton County. The trade of building with morter, stone and brick has
been handed down for at least five generations.
Bill and Tabitha had five daughters and six sons, they were: 1. Tena who
married Bailey Craft 2. Jim who married a Richison and had a son Steve that
was raised by Bill and Tabitha. 3. Will who married Hulda Reed. 4. Joe who
married Viola Brown. 5. Curt who married Mary Bilbrey. 6. Hassie who married
Lewis Glasscock. 7. Albert who married Minnie Ray. 8. Morgan who married
Alpha Langford. 9. Ernestine who married Burton Reed. 10. Ellis who married
Burton Reed. 10. Ellis who married Sinkler Neal. 11. Minnie who married
Quitman Hunter.
All of these are now deceased. Bill Johnson died August 12, 1914.
Tabitha died May 5, 1913. Bill and Tabitha are buried in the Old Flat Creek
Cemetary.

First, Thanks for all the great research you have done. May I ask the source for Nancy Sparks birth date? I would like to tell you that Nancy 's father Jeremiah Sparks was not the son of Edward Sparks, but the son of Thomas Sparks , brother of Edward. Notes for Thomas Glasscock, Sr.:
GEN: See Historical Document.

GEN: Killed William Forrester on Nov. 5, 1723 under unknown circumstances.
Fled the county and was not seen by his family again. His lands were
confiscated and his family had to start over In Fauquier Co.,
Virginia.

The Glas(s)cock - Glassco Saga; Lawrence A. Glassco, 1974
Thomas Glascock was declared "arrived at full age at the June 1, 1692
sitting of the Richmond County Court so we assume he was born before
1671. He had married about 1689, and lived on Farnham Creek , the next
creek up the Rappahannock River, about 3 miles north of "Indian Banks", and in Richmond County. He was a first cousin of Col. George Glascock who lived at "Indian Banks" plantation.
Thomas built up a tobacco plantation and estate on Farnham Creek, and in
1718 and 1719 was appointed surveyor of the h ighway from "Capt. Tarpley's house over the Morattico Hill to the main road".
Then tragedy struck. On November 5, 1723, Thomas made an assault on the
body of William Forrester by stabbing him with a knifeand causing his
instant death . Thomas fled from his home and was not heard from again.
There was no trial of the case. His son, Gregory, who was 23 at the time, accompanied him on his e scape. Upon the son's return to Virginia, he was arraigned bya Richmond County
Court as an accessory after the murder. After hearing the testimony of
Gregory, and his brothers John and Thomas II, he was aquitted and placed on an order of good behavior.
The murder and subsequent flight left Thomas' wife Sarah with six children on the Farnham Creek property. She probably maintained the f amily home for a time in the best way she could manage, but "King" Robert Carter eventually took possession of Thomas' real estate, negroes, and other property which was forfeited to the government. King Carter was the largest landowner in Virgina and the Glascock's neighbor. The next generation in Thomas' line apparently had to start all over again on their
own. They moved north from th eir old home in the Tidewater, and established large families and many descendants in northern Virginia.

King Carter's will of 1726 indicates that he had taken charge of Thomas' personal property, and expected to get Glascock's land also. It states "if my son John (Carter) comes to enjoy the said Glascock's lands under a good tittle that then he further consider the said Glascock's children in such proportion as he shall think fitt, or otherwise gratify them according to his discretion". Since both John and Peter Glascock settled on land belongingto John Carter in Prince William County, that may indicate that Carter did honor the request of his father's will.

The original newspaper report o f Thomas Glasscock's flight from justice:

[Brøderbund WFT Vol. 6, Ed. 1, Tree #4225, Date of Import: May 28, 2001]

Thomas was also a Rappahannock River tobacco planter [ of the Northern Neck.] His cousin, Col. George Glascock apparently built "Indian Banks" on the Morattico Creek. Col. George amassed a fortune and his children married prominent persons.

Thomas lived a few miles north on Farnham Creek. Less is known about him. His wife, Sarah Stone, was related to the important Stone family of Col. John Stone who was Sheriff of Richmond County in 1692. Thomas may have been a successful tobacco planter, like his cousin. He inherited land from his father, Gregory, in 1682. In 1715 he acted on a committee to take depositions in a property question. In 1718 and 1719 he was appointed surveyor of the highway from Capt. Tarpley's house over the Morattico Hill to the main road.

Then tragedy struck. On November 5, 1723, Thomas made "an assualt on the Body of William Forrester by stabbing him with a knife by means whereof the said Forrester Instantly Dyed." No other details on the murder are available. No knowledge of the circumstances surrounding the incident are known, nor is a motive known, or any justifying facts. Afterwards Thomas fled from his home and apparently was never heard from again by his family. His son Gregory, who was 23 years old at the time, accompanied his father and was later arraigned by a Richmond County Court as an accessory after the murder. After a hearing the testimony of Gregory and his brothers, John (age 24) and Thomas, Jr. (age 18), the court found that "the principal not being attainted, noe indictment will lye against the Accessory, therefore the sd Gregory Glascock is Admitted to Baille." There was no trial.

"But presumably in 1723 the world came crashing down on this branch of the family when Thomas murdered William Forrester." Sarah and her six children managed for a while at Farnham Creek, but "King" Robert Carter took possession of Thomas real estate, his slaves and other property which was forfeited to the government.

Probably the older boys helped to support the family. At the time of the incident, Peter was only aged nine. They moved north from their old home in the Tidewater and established large families and had many descendants in northern Virginia in the Piedmont area.

Both John and Peter settled on land belonging to John Carter in Prince William County, (which may indicate that Carter did honor the request of his father's will.

William and Sarah Stone of the Northern Neck of Virginia, by Bertha C.
Chandler

The Northern Neck of Virginia is more than an historic Place. It's past
history lives and breathes with you, and it's pulse beats with yours if
you walk along the old Indian Paths, and the creeks that still bear
Indian n ames. In that ancient land where the "Rappahannoc" Indians were
the first settlers, and were members of the powerful "Powhatan
Confederacy", there is much history. Their tribe along with others made a
strong group on the east coast. They traveled by water or on land by
foot, and made the first roads which were paths made by animals. They
followed the animal paths that went to water , and these paths later
became the roads that the settlers us ed to roll their tobacco hogsheads
to the nearest port.

The Indians left their names behind when they were pushed furthe r and
further inland. Names like "Rappahannoc Indian Towne", Indian Banks,
Menokin, Morattico, Tappahannock, Powhatan and Totuskey are still in use
there. I found the Northern Neck of Virginia to be a neck or peninsular
of land lying between th e Potomac and the Rappahannock Rivers. It is
almost an island . It most likely was referred to by the early settlers at
Jam estown as the Northern Neck. The name appears in print in early
records as "Ye Northern Necke". It is a narrow strip of land about twenty
miles wide and runs inland between the two rivers for about one hundred
miles before it narrows at Fredericksburg, Virginia. There the Rivers
almost join, almost making it an island. It was to this place that
William and Sarah Stone brought their young family and seated their
Plantation on Totuskey Creek, Old Rappahannock County.

William Stone bought 200 acres of land on Totuskey Creek from Gyles and
Mary Cole on October 20 , 1672. (deed book 5, p. 86 & 87, Essex County
Court House in Tappahannock, Va., for 600 Lbs. of tobacco received from
Wm. Stone...a conveyance of 200 acres of land on Totuskey Creek;)

Another deed in Essex County, where the Old Rappahannock County records
are kept at Tappahannock, is dated April 3, 1680. On page 105, " Robert

A transcribed copy of a will the will of William Stone, of Farnham Parish, is included in the Glasscock Family File at the Missouri Historical Society Archives. This file is a collection of letters written about 1953 and notes and documents accumulated over many years by Alta [Mrs. Elmer] Botts of Custer, Montana. In addition to Glasscocks are the Moss and Butler Families of Putnam County, Indiana, Fleming County, Kentucky and Fauquier and Richmond Counties, Virginia. [my notes taken: 21 July 1995 ]
In William Stones' Will a mention is made of son-in-law, Robert Scolfield, who received goods about six years ago [ca 1698]. It is uncertain to which daughter he was married. Was his wife already deceased?
Elizabeth was single and later married William Dawson.
       Mary had married Mr. Fan.
Sarah had married Thomas Glascock, the ill-fated runaway.
[ Sarah was not named in her father's will, but her two oldest
sons: Gregory and John Glascock are named.]

Thomas patented land in 1643 in Warwick River County, Virginia and was listed among the fifty prominent families there. [ p. 240, Old Churches, Families and Ministers of Virginia, by Bishop William Meade.] Thomas moved north from the James River and lived on his patent on the Peanketanke River in 1652. Probably he moved further north to settle on the Morattico Creek land in the early 1660's.

Notes for Thomas Glascock:
[Brøderbund WFT Vol. 2, Ed. 1, Tree #2144, Date of Import: Sep 14, 1998]

THOMAS GLASCOCK (1620-1663) Just what forces combined to cause Thomas to leave England are unknown. We do know that England was in those days a very distraught country, for the Great Rebellion--the bitter struggle between King Charles I and Parliament for control of the country--was in process. England's Civil War began in 1642 and the battle between the Royalist Cavaliers, who supported the reigning Stuart king, and the Roundheads, who supported Parliament and Oliver
Cromwell for political and religious control of the country soon split the nation into two armed camps. 1643 was a bloody year
in England and, as in all wars, many people suffered great hardships. Some of them left the country and emigrated to
America--and among these emigrants was Thomas Glascock. Perhaps he was a disillusioned Cavalier. During the war a
considerable number of these Royalists came to Virginia because it held steadfast to the Crown and the old reign of Charles I
under the rule of Sir William Berkely. Berkely, a rich young Royalist, had been commissioned governor of Virginia by Charles
and arrived in 1642, about a year ahead of Thomas. Perhaps he left for religious reasons for believers of the established Church
of England were at the threats of Puritans and reformers, and vice versa during these dare days. Or perhaps he was just an
adventurous younger son who wanted to try his luck as a Virginia planter. One of Thomas' 1643 patents was for 130 acres in
Warwick River County "parallel to his own and land of John Leyden and adjacent to land of Thomas Davis" for transporting
three persons to Virginia from England. John Leyden's patents, issued in 1636, are for land on the "Old" Poquoson River, the
"New" Poquosin River, and the James River. Thus it appears that Thomas' 1643 patent was for land on the lower part of the
peninsula between the James and the York Rivers and situated near the James River somewhat between Newport News,
Hampton and Yorktown, now mostly a heavily populated city area. On August 30, 1643, Thomas also patented 200 acres "a
mile and a half upon the South side of Peankatanke River, adj Christopher Royce" for transporting 4 persons to Virginia. Two
of the four were himself and his wife Jane. We are sure that he lived on this patent, for in 1652 he was appointed Justice of the
Peace for the Peankatanke area by the Burgesses, sitting at Jamestown. The Peankatanke River is north of his other patent, in
York County on the peninsula between the York and Rappahannock Rivers, and it flows into the Chesapeake Bay just a few
miles below the mouth of the Rappahannock. The first patent on the Peankatanke was granted in 1642 and only four others
were granted before Thomas', so we know that he was one of the first settlers in the area. Settlement started around
Jamestown, moved up and down the James River, and then spread further north and south along the Tidewater coast as Indians
were driven back and more settlers arrived. John Leydon (or Laydon) is listed in the records as an "Ancient Planter"...one who
arrived in Virginia before 1616. In fact, he arrived with John Smith and the first settlers, at age 27, on the "Susan Constant" in
1607. He married a maid who came in 1608, and the wedding was the first one solemnized in English America. He survived the
massacre of 1622 and by the time of the muster of 1624/1625 only one other man is listed as a survivor of the first settlement of
1607--so he was apparently the oldest and the last of the original settlers. If Thomas did live next to him in 1643, the 63 year
old Leyden and his wife must have had some interesting tales to tell of the suffering and trials of the first 36 years of the colony!
Thomas' other neighbor, Thomas Davis, was the son of James Davis, also an "Ancient Planter" who had died before 1633. We
can only speculate about what contact the Glascocks had with these earliest settlers at the Jamestown settlement, but it is
interesting to learn that Glascock's patent was apparently between the patents of these revered "Ancient Planters." On June 28,
1652, Thomas Glascock patented 600 acres in Lancaster County, 200 acres of which were granted upon his surrendering "200
acres on Peankatanke River formerly granted." This transaction proves that the Glascocks arrived in Lancaster County in 1652.
Here the Glascocks set about the task of building a home and clearing land for tobacco. The typical Virginia dwelling of that day
was a frame one and a half story building, with brick underpinning and high chimneys at either end. Nails were so hard to get
that settlers often burned their homes when moving in order to get nails to start a new house. After the house was built, the
forests had to be cleared. After the trees were cut, the stumps had to be dug up and the soil broken up with hoes before the
tobacco could be planted. Probably Thomas had some of his headrights or indentured servants help his sons and him with this
hard labor. So their tobacco plantation began to grow and Thomas established a way of life as a Rappahannock River planter
that was to continue for generations in the Glascock family. Little else is known about the lives of Thomas and Jane. It is
probable that Thomas died before June 3, 1667, for on that date his son, Gregory, was in possession of the Morattico Creek
land which had been granted to him in 1662. No record of his or his wife's death; Thomas Glascock's will is presumably in lost
will book (1692-1709) of Richmond County. Commissioner, Warwick County, 1652. (Virginia Colonial Abstracts Volume 26,
York County, 1648-1657 by Fleet, page 43).

THOMAS GLASCOCK II, the second son of Thomas and Jane and
born and raised in Virginia, apparently amassed a considerable amount of
land and wealth for his
family. In 1667 and again in 1683 he was deeded parts of Thomas' original

Morattico Creek land by his brother Gregory, or George Glascock. In
about 1672
he married Anne Nichols and between 1682 and 1691 he and his wife
were willed
over 1,000 acres of land on Totaskey Creek, the second creek north of
the Morattico, by her father George Nichols. He is listed in these
documents as
Thomas Glascock, GENT., indicating that he was enough of a landowner
to be
classified as a "gentleman," which was a title which meant much more then
than
it does now. In 1691 he also bought for 14,000 lbs. of tobacco another
400 acre plantation near Totaskey mill that had belonged to his
father-in-law Nichols.

"Indian Banks" was the ancestral home of this branch of the Glascocks.
The plantation was so named because it was apart of the land where the
Morraughtaownas Indians lived when white men first settled Jamestown in
1607. A tribe of the Algonquian nation ruled by Powhatan lived around the
plantation. This tribe's principal town was at the site of the Glascock's
home which is about 4 and one half miles southeast of Epping Forest.

Notes for Robert Glasscock:
ROBERT GLASCOCK received a grant of 200 acres in Elizabeth City, Virginia in
1635, next to Lt. Cheeseman's land. Land could be had almost for the asking
throughout the colonial period, although many a frontier squatter who succumbed
to the lure for land ignored the formalities of getting a deed. In colonial law, land titles rested ultimately upon grants from the
crown, and in colonial practice, the evolution of land policy in the first colony set patterns that were followed everywhere save in
New England.

In 1614, when Governor Dale gave each of the Virginia Company's colonists three acres for his own use, it was the beginning
of a policy that every colonist could claim a plot of his own. In 1618 the company, lacking any assets other than land, promised
each investor a fifty-acre "share-right" for twelve pounds, 10 shillings, and each settler a "headright" for paying his own way or
for bringing in others. When Virginia became a royal colony in 1624, the headright system continued to apply, administered by
the governor and his council.

Lord Baltimore adopted the same practice in Maryland, and successive proprietors in the other southern and middle colonies
adopted variations on the plan. As time passed, certain tracts were put up for sale and throughout the colonies, special grants
(often sizable) went to persons of rank or persons who had performed some meritorious service, such as fighting the Indians.
Since land was plentiful and population desired, the rules tended to be generously interpreted and carelessly applied. With the
right connections, persons or companies might engross handsome estates and vast speculative tracts in the interior, looking
toward future growth and rising land values.

From the beginning of colonization, the real-estate boomer was a stock figure in American history, and access to power was
often access to wealth. But by the early 1700's, acquisition of land was commonly by purchase under more or less regular
conditions of survey and sale by the provincial government. The later national land surveys followed the southern practice. The
first grants were made without any conditions attached, but at an early date, the crown and proprietors decided to recover
something from the giveaways by the levy of annual quit-rents on the land.

In the Middle Ages, such payments would quit (release) the tenant from military
and other duties to his lord. In the New World, however, such levies had no
roots in a feudal tradition, and came to be a point of chronic protest,
resistance, and evasion. But they remained on the books. Some promoters of
colonization, including Ferdinando Gorges, Lord Baltimore, and the Lords
Proprietors of Carolina, had dreams of reviving the feudal manor in the New
World. Their plans went awry, it is commonly said, because of the New World
environment.

With land aplenty, there was little call to volunteer for serfdom. Yet in unexpected ways the southern colonies gave rise to
something analogous, a new institution with a new name: the plantation. The word originally carried the meaning of colony. The
plantations in the New World were the colonies, and planters were the settlers who had "planted" them. Gradually the name
attached itself to individual holdings of large size. If one distinctive feature of the South's staple economy was a good market in
England, another was a trend toward large-scale production. Those who planted tobacco soon discovered that it quickly
exhausted the soil, thereby giving an advantage to the planter who had extra fields to rotate in beans and corn or to leave fallow.
With the increase of the tobacco crop, moreover, a fall in prices meant that economies of scale might come into play: the large
planter with lower cost per unit might still make a profit. Gradually he would extend his holdings along the river fronts, and
thereby secure the advantage of direct access to the ocean-going vessels that moved freely up and down the waterways of the
Chesapeake, discharging goods from London and taking on hogsheads of tobacco.

So easy was the access in fact that the Chesapeake colonies never required a city of any size as a center of commerce, and the
larger planters functioned as merchants and harbor masters for their neighbors. If the planter found no volunteers for serfdom,
and if wage labor was scarce and expensive, one could still purchase an indentured servant for six pounds to thirty pounds (a
substantial sum, which in much of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries
would equal perhaps 900 to 5,000 pounds of tobacco), and get his labor for a
term of years. Voluntary indentured servitude accounted for probably half the
arrivals of white settlers in all the colonies outside New England. The name
derived from the indenture, or contract, by which a person could bind himself
to labor in return for transportation to the New World. Usually one made the
contract with a shipmaster who would then sell it to a new master upon arrival.
Not all went voluntarily. The London underworld developed a flourishing trade
in "kids" and "spirits", who were kidnapped or spirited into servitude. On
occasion orphans were bound off to the New World; from time to time the mother
country sent convicts into colonial servitude, the first as early as 1617.

After 1717, by act of Parliament, convicts guilty of certain crimes could
escape the hangman by "transportation." Most of these, like Moll Flanders, the
lusty heroine of Daniel Defoe's novel, seem to have gone to the Chesapeake.
And after 1648, political and military offenders met a like fate, beginning
with some captives of the Parliamentary armies. In due course, however, the
servant reached the end of his term, usually after four to seven years, claimed
the freedom dues set by custom and law--some money, tools, clothing, food--and
took up land of his own. And with the increase of the colonies, servants had a
wider choice of destination.

Pennsylvania became more often the chosen land, "one of the best poor man's countries in the world," in the verdict of a judge
at the time. Robert Glascock is known to have had indentured servants, a Peter Rigglesworth turned over to Robert Glascocke
in 1637. Peter Rigglesworth, purchased by Robert Glascocke, was a land owner by 1652 when Robert Grimes patenting 300
acres lying at the head of the westernmost branch of Elizabeth River describes it as adjoining Peter Rigglesworth. The
westernmost branch of Elizabeth River is now usually called Western Branch. Robert Glascocke received a patent on October
7, 1635 for 200 acres lying in Elizabeth City County adjoining Lieutenant Cheeseman.
The Glascock, like many other Warwick and Elizabeth City County families, somewhat later moved to the Northern Neck of
Virginia which lies between the Rappahannock and Potomac rivers. Early church services were conducted at the house of
Robert Glascock. The citizens of Elizabeth City, Virginia conducted church services at the house of Robert Glascock until a
church could be constructed in Elizabeth City. PATENT--ROBERT GLASCOCKE, 200 acres, Elizabeth County, 7 October

Cheeseman and East into the woods. Transportation of four servants. PATENT--ROBERT GLASCOCKE, 50 acres Low.

Notes for William Glasscock, Sr.:

The Glasscock's with whatever variation in spelling are all descended from an ancient Anglo -
Saxon family in England called Glascocke. This family appear in the pre Norman Doomsday
Book for Warwickshire as a powerful landowning clan. It appears to have been a large family
even then spread all over parts of England. The branch the american Glasscocks is
descended from were living in Essex by the 1500s. Again they were an important family and
their heraldry was registered. A Glasscock served as an office bearer at the court of King
James I (James 6th Scotland) and the head of the family was described as a gentleman as
opposed to only a yeoman. The first Glasscock to go to Virginia sometime before 1639 was
Robert the youngest son of Henry who lived in the Epping Forest area of Essex near to
London. Thomas who is credited by many as being the first was in fact Robert's married son
who came over later. By the 1720s the family was very wealthy with over 1500 acres of
tobacco plantations amongst them. The family was ruined when in the 3rd generation another
Thomas committed a murder and fled the colony with his eldest son Gregory. Thomas was
never seen again although Gregory returned and all Thomas's land and posessions were
confiscated by the crown. The family eventually moved to northern Virginia supposedly onto
land given to them by the son of "King Carter" who received most of the Glasscock
Rappahanock Valley estates. Most of the family stayed there as did the Glasscocks unaffected
by Thomas's actions down south. However two grandsons of Gregory decided to try to
improve their lot and crossed the Monhagela River into what is now SW PA but at that time
was still part of VA and part of Monongallia County later. In 1781 the extended Mason - Dixon
Line left this area in PA. Peter settled in Bullskin Run in what is now Fayette County PA but
later moved to Ohio then Kentucky. His son Lemuel was convicted of 2nd degree murder but
only served a few years. His biography is in the rare books section of LoC. John settled along
Dunkard Creek in what is now Greene County PA near where the town of Mt Morris now
stands. John was a contemporary of Levi Morris who founded the town. It is likely where John
settled in now in WV. Legend has it that after clearing the land and building a cabin he
returned to Maryland to collect his wife and at least one child. When he returned to Mt. Morris
a giant of a man called Scott had taken the land. They agreed to fight for the land and despite
the unequal sizes John won. Maybe he would have done better to have moved on. This giant
then moved to what is now called Scott's Run WV which of course was one of the biggest and
most profitable coalfields in the states. By the early 1800s the family seems to have moved on
as there are records of John and his son Charles being appointed to survey the line of a road
in the Buffalo Creek area linking communities in the Paw Paw, Indian Creek and Whiteday
Creek areas which is near Arnettsville almost due west of Morgantown and strangely South
West of Scott's Run. Scott's Run was to figure again with the Glasscock name when in 1920
former WV Governor George Glasscock who during his time in office had put down the "mine
wars" sank 200,000 dollars into the Brock Mine. It was the only shaft mine on the coalfield but
he sold it before it went into production. It turned out to be a highly productive mine. The direct
line from John next surfaced in Mobley which is west of Mannington on WV1/15 and also
owned property in Brink which they still do.
