Six months ago I had never heard of Stephen Glare. While visiting a neighbor one day we started reminising about the history of the Burnt Islands. He mentioned a double murder that happened here over two hundred years ago involving a female caretaker that beheaded a man and his wife. I was intrigued with his tale and listened intently as he relayed it to me. He said Stephen and his wife were found murdered one day, beheaded by the woman, on an indoor chopping block. The militia was sent for and located the woman and brought her back to the home. Then they hung her on a tree near the home. He then said, they may have hung the wrong person. I didn't know whether to believe the story or not but asked him their name and he said Stephen Glare and his wife. I jotted the name down on a piece of paper and filed it with my unorganized stack of notes. Weeks or months later while searching my family tree, I ran across the name STEPHEN GLARE and quickly determined that he was my 4Xgreat grandfather. Weeks passed before I found this group and read about Stephen being poisoned by a slave. I called my neighbor and said his tale of the incident didn't jive with what I'd read in this group. I told him I'd read in this group that a slave had poisoned Stephen and one of his daughters. That's when he repeated "No......it was Stephen and his wife who were murdered......and not by a slave but by a white caretaker and that she decapitated them, and was hung in a tree across from the house, not at Sampson Landing", which is about a mile away. So, I don't know what is the truth. Yesterday I went to the sites and took some photos and created the webpage below. I will add to it if I have anything to add and if this site doesn't allow me to link this website, I will email it to you upon request. http://community-2.webtv.net/swamptoy/StephenGlare/index.html
