Origins of the Gladson name

I've long been interested in the origin of our family name. I hadn't realized before that the same name might have originated or been adopted in different places and at different times, but such appears to be the case with our name, just as there are many Smith family lines or Wright family lines originating independently from ancestors who worked in those trades.

Some Gladsons trace their family name back to France where it was Gladsone' at one time. Some of us trace our name back to Scotland where it was Gladstone originally. I have corresponded with one man from northern India whose father named him John Gladson simply because he liked the sound of the name. In India, people don't follow the same naming conventions we do in the West. I've also heard from one nice lady whose Gladstone surname originated when her great-grandfather emigrated from Russia via Poland and changed his name from Glachstein to Gladstone to sound less Jewish. Perhaps some of those Gladstones later adopted the Gladson spelling to sound less English or Scottish.

I've corresponded with Gladsons who are certain of their name origin for each of the above. My research has led me back to Scotland via North Carolina. That Gladson line goes back in America to the revolution. We have a patriot ancestor - cool! I haven't found our immigrant ancestoryet, but I hope I'm getting close.

For what it's worth those who trace their family line to North Carolina or Maryland are likely to have Scottish ancestors with the name Gladstone which originated in a small town (Biggar) in the southern uplands of Scotland (aka the Borders region).

A Gladstone descendant in Biggar, whose name is Brian Lambie, is putting together a reunion of Gladstones and Gladsons in Scotland this September. Please see the postings related to that on this GenForum site.

Warm Regards to all!

Bob Gladson
