For those who may wonder about the identity of the Gitchels noted in Long Lake township of Grand Traverse Co. MI, they are of the family of Squire Levi Gitchel of Jamestown township, Ottawa Co. MI.This branch spells their surname Gitchel, not Gitchell, although a few records will show it otherwise.Specifically, it is Squire Levi's son James William Gitchel b. ca. 1845 PA, d. 10 Mar 1897 Grand Traverse Co. MI, mar. 16 Apr 1876 Emily A. Davis b. 19 Jan 1852 Baltimore, Baltimore Co. MD, d. 20 Jun 1892 due to complications from childbirth. There is some disagreement over her middle initial. She was the dau. of Eugene V. Davis and Ethelinda G. Price.James W. Gitchel had sold his Ottawa Co. farm ca. 1875 and moved to GT Co.In 1880 he was farming 40 A., the SE ¼ SE ¼ sec 4, T27N R12W, located just east and very close to the Friends meeting house; his father-in-law E. V. Davis was in sections 2 and 3.Children of James W. and Emily were as follows:
i. Alma b. 8 Feb. 1877 Long Lake tsp., GT Co. MI, mar. unk. Morse
ii. Ethelinda b. ca.1879 MI, d. 4 April 1904, bur Linwood Cem., Long Lake twp., mar. 20 Sep 1900 Howard M. Lewis (b. ca. 1878 MI, son of Alexander M. C. Lewis and Margaret J. Wilson), 3 ch.; Ethelinda d. a week after birth of 3rd ch.; their son Albert Guy Lewis b. 12 Oct 1901, d. 29 Apr 1978 was enum. with an uncle Gena (not George) Shearer in 1910 and 1920
iii. Louisa G. b. 24 Dec. 1880 Long Lake tsp., d. 20 Mar 1932 Long Lake tsp., mar. 24 Jun 1903 GT Co. MI Gena A. Shearer (b. 10 Nov 1876 Long Lake tsp., d. 20 Mar 1958, son of of William Shearer and Ada Wykoff), 3 ch. Wm. Gordon 1909, Leah Jennette 1910-1910, Gertrude 1914
iv. Amy b. 19 May 1882 Long Lake tsp., mar. 28 September 1904 Long Lake tsp. Rev. Gervas Albert Corey, b. ca. 1882 IN, son of John J. Corey and Ruth Elliot; Gervas was a minister in Manton, MI; mar. by James D. Carter, M.G., wit. Mabella Marsh of Traverse City, Edgar A. Derbyshire of Manton
v. Ben Amos b. 22 Feb. 1884 Long Lake tsp., GT Co. MI, mar. 21 Dec 1909 (or 1908?) Ida Mae Waldron (b. ca. 1887 Harrisville, MI, dau. of Ephraim Waldron and Eliza Ludington)
vi. Rachel b. 1 April 1886 Long Lake tsp., mar. 1904 James Oran Pepper (b. Oct 1883 MI, son of Nelson Pepper and Emma M. _?_), 3 ch. June Ethland 1905, Delbert ca. 1909, Donald ca. 1910
vii. Guy Wallace b. 6 Apr 1888 GT Co. MI,d. aft. 1942, mar. bef. 1917 unk. (d. aft. 1942); ch. incl. Donald Eugene, Mary, James Wallace (father of W. Dent Gitchell, noted law professor); GWG res. Little Rock, AR 1942 and worked for the Pullman Co.
viii. Emily G. b. 30 May 1892 Long Lake tsp., mar. 1917 Glenn I. Hobbs; after her mother died, she was adopted and name changed to Emily G. Loucks - her adopted parents were prob. her mother's sister Mary E. Davis (b. 1857) and husband Archibald Loucks (1846-1893)
The David Gitchel or Gitchell who d. 1883 or 1884 is probably the David Gitchell (two L's) b. ca. 1813 NY who lived most of his life in Berrien Co., or his son David Jr. (b. ca. 1850), who may have d. about the same time as his father.David Gitchell of Berrien Co. may be a 1st cousin of Squire Levi Gitchel of Ottawa Co., although this is not proven. There is much data on the family of Squire Levi Gitchel in Ottawa Co. MI records.I am not a descendant of either line.
