Yes Cromwell was a common English name just like Fairfax, Meade and Penn. The problem is, Christopher Gist worked for Thomas Lord Fairfax who's grandfather was a General in Oliver Cromwell's Army. This also applies to William Penn's father. He was an Admiral in Oliver Cromwell's Navy.

Last was Bishop Meade. Bishop Meade writes that he was a direct descendent of Oliver Cromwell's father and he is also related to Thomas Cromwell through Thomas Cromwell's sister who married a Williams. The Williams name was changed to Cromwell by Henry VIII. This would make Thomas Cromwell Oliver Cromwell's great uncle. Bishop Meade was Thomas Lord Fairfax's Bishop.

So I am thinking Birds of a Feather
