My gggggreat grandfather Jacob Myers was a surveyor for Christopher Gist and George Washington in Pittsburgh. From what I can see in family ties here in Pittsburgh, this group are connected to Meriwether Lewis who started his expedition out of Pittsburgh in the late summer of 1803.

Gist Family members could be in Kansas area. You need to find out why your family is in Kansas. Also look at every in-law in your family. Family members tended to stick together and marry the same in-laws over and over.

Example, the Washington, Lewis, Lee, Spotswood line goes back 300 years or more. Intermarriage was so tight, it's almost impossible to be related to one without being related to them all.

One reason family members might not want to talk is because of a connection to John Brown and the Thompson brothers in Kansas. My take is Col Robert E Lee and Caption Jeb Brown Stuart were related to John Brown when they captured John Brown and the Thompson brothers at Harpers Ferry. It's well recorded that Jeb Brown Stuart knew John Brown in Kansas. It was also Jeb Brown Stuart that negotiated with John Brown at Harpers Ferry.
