William Girton b1740 is he really German?

Now that I am convinced that Magdalena Shipman the wife of
William Girton is really Magdalena Schubmann the dau of Jacob Schubmann Jr. , I suspect that William Girton is really not the English Girton. No proof yet. We do know that many of the Germans in
New Jersey changed their names to English names during the times of the Revolutionary War. His two youngest children were baptized at the St.James German Lutheran "Straw" Church
in New Jersey in 1783 and 1786, his name was shown as Gerden
at the time of the Baptisms, not proof in itself.
I will be looking for proof to see if this scenario is correct.
