Hi, Monica,
Your question was "which is it?"The answer is D:All of the above.Except there's one more spelling:Goertner. The original German spelling was Goertner, which deteriorated into Gortner (I'm guessing that Gordner is just a spin-off of Gortner). Finally, when folks began migrating to America, the spelling quickly changed to Girdner.
There's probably way more than you want or need, but I'll paste what I have into this follow-up message and see if it will allow it all:

Notes for JAMES PLEASANT GIRDNER:
In 1899, James Pleasant Girdner rode in the wild race for homesteads in the Indian Territory. As I remember it, he found some land and staked his claim, only to be cheated out of it by someone else who said he staked his claim before J.P.
James Pleasant and Nola Frances Girdner, along with their children, Glen, Dale, Stanley, and Eva moved from Piedmont, Kansas tothe Verde Valley in the Arizona Territory in 1907.The family had sold most of their meager belonging including furniture, animals, and wagons in Piedmont, and had their money in the bank when it, like many other banks, went under during a financial scare.A banker friend met them at the back at night, and they were able to obtain enough money to head west (for health and economic reasons). They came on a train to Ashfork, stayed overnight, and manhandled their remaining possessions from their rented box car to the narrow gauge railroad. They completed their journey on the narrouw gauge railroad through Perkinsville to Jerome.
While on the train, the Girdners met a wealthy man who owned much of Jerome. The man turned out to be Senator James Clark of Arizona, for whom Clarkdale was named. My grandfather was so taken with this man, that he changed the middle name of his oldest son to Clark.
Stanley remembers the next few months as "Hell on Earth" in describing the blood on the streets in the mornings outside their first Jerome rental which turned out to be in the "red-light" district. They quickly moved to a better location. This was around the time with the New York Times labeled Jerome as the "wickedest city in America."Dave Girdner remembers that some 30 years later, Nola admonished the grandkids not to play "Red Light, Green Light" at school unless the term "red light" was not used.
J.P. would take barely enough grub for about 3 days and set out on foot looking for a horse and land to buy.It has been said that on at least one occasion, J.P. walked for 5 days, camping out or staying with friendly folk.Apparently, it was within 2 weeks that he did buy a horse. In about 4 months, he bought 49 acres from Captain Jackson (a relative of President Andrew Jackson).Capt. Jackson's name was the first on a title for the land, which was Indian country before that.A tent was purchased and with 4 ft. wooden sides & floor, an extra "fly" canvass over the top with air space for insulation, he planted the structure in cans filled with water to keep varmints outside.Scorpions, lizards, ants, skunks, coyotes and summer heat had to be dealt with while grubbing mesquites and growing fruits and vegetables to survive.Water arrived in gravity-flow ditches extracted from Oak Creek several miles upstream.Within three years, an unsused school house from upper Oak Creek was purchased and rebuilt to be the Girdner home for the next 50 years or so.
The Girdners wer frugal, honest, and hard-working.J.P. was the Justice of the Peace from 1910-1914, would deliver Sears and "Monkey Wards" catalogs in a wagon to and from Prescott, going over Mingus through Jerome, and then distributing them to outlying areas. For 20 years, he was the clerk of the Oak Creek School Board (District 16).
Nola was a nurse to many, and excellent seamstress, and always involved in school functions, subsituting, and being involved in other "acceptable" community events. She could recite the name of every bone in the human body.A young lady living in Girdner's shack and teaching at the school on the rance violated Nola's rules, one being not attending (what many considered decent) community dances. The district superintendent had no replacement for the teacher, and explained that this teacher was a good girl, and for instance, didn't attent the notoriously wild dances at Cornville.Other conflicts arose when Nola would take in unfortunate children, one being part Indian and requested monetary assistance. On at least one occasion, she did receive $5.00 a month during one school year!Puritan beliefs of the family tended to isolate them.
Around 1912, a new 2-room, "Red School" was built up on the mesa, off Girdner property.

Notes for NOLA FRANCES LOCKHART:
I always thought that my grandmother's name was Nola Frances, but in the Lockhart family tree filled out by my mother, my grandmother's name is listed as Frances M. Lockhart. What gives?
When Nola's mother died in 1883, her father sent the children to live with various families. At 13, she was taken in by a couple in Kansas by the name of Keene. She began writing her "Gleanings from Childhood" by 1891, so she would have been 18 years old at that time.Nola only had a 1st grade education in Tennessee. When the family moved to Kansas, she was in the 7th grade, and had to work extremely hard to catch up to her classmates. Her teacher took a special interest in Nola, and with her encouragement, Nola went to an academy for further education and became a teacher.
I found a hand-written note in one of the boxes of Mom and Daddy's things, and I am assuming that it is referring to Gramper Keene:"Mary Foulker was born in November 12, 1827 at Banbridge, Ohio. There she resided until the 14th of September, 1851, when she was married to Thomas Keene.Soon after which they removed to Booneville, Missouri. They lived there firve years, then came to Linn County, Kansas in 1861.After a year's residence there, she moved with her children to Illinois, her husband having enlisted in the army while in Linn County. After 13 years residence in Illinois, they moved to Elk County, Kansas in 1879, where she has since lived. She united with the Methodist Church when she was fifteen years old, and has always manifested a Christian spirit. They had 4 (or 7?) children born to them, 3 of whom survive her -- one in Oklahoma, one in Idaho, and Mrs. Perkins in Elk County.
Grandma lived with us in Morenci in 1948.Our address was 20E Hill. Our telephone # was 4521
