African American Gipson's/Gibson's

I am an African American "Gipson" via my father who is a Gipson. His family is all from South Carolina and I was looking to get more information from either white or black Gipson's/Gibson's on the name and it's origins.

I tried doing some grassroots research on my own through family members, but it is difficult to go beyond great grandparents, as African American families have scattered histories. My grandfather has told me that we have white Gipsons/Gibsons in the family and that we also have Native American roots.

The other only clue I have outside of South Carolina is that originally at some point my family name was "Gibson" and it was arbitrarily changed to "Gipson."

Any information that anyone out there has would be greatly appreciated.
