Jim (J.R.) Jilton m. Melissa Clemmons
I have been researching the Jiltons (possibly Gilton) for some years. My great grandmother Mary Sue (Susie or Susan) Jilton (b. 1871) married a Madison (Matt or Matthew) Flatt Winningham (b. 1859) around 1890 probably in Tennessee. His family was from McNairy or Hardin County, Tennessee. We always thought their name was spelled Jilton until this past week I ran into some information on my Winningham relatives which spelled her name as Gilton.
Mary's father and mother were Jim (J.R.) Jilton and Melissa Clemmons Jilton. He fought for the south in the Civil War and worked on a steamboat for 14 years.Besides Mary, they had a son named Bob Jilton. He and his wife Ida lived in Corinth, Alcorn County, Mississippi. They had a half brother named Marshall Jilton.J.R.'s parents were Tom and Susie Jilton. This is all information passed down through word of mouth and family tradition so I'm looking to verify anything.
Does anyone recognize ANY of these names?
