Hello Bettie,
I posted the info you have listed below and used my middle name (Joan) on some of the postings. In looking at your info, I do notice one typo. "Aunt Norie" (my grandfather, Richard Emanuel "Manuel" Ray's sister, Nora Dell Ray) married a Branscomb, not a Bishop. Nora Branscomb and family relocated from Putnam County, Missouri to Arkansas. The info that I posted and you are referencing was compiled my Maude Branscomb, deceased, wife of Terry Branscomb. (Terry is/was the son of Nora Ray Branscomb.) Maude made the compilation with the assistance of Manuel's daughters, Pearl and Thelma, and other relatives. Who is the 'Marcus' whom you reference? Also, I have read your posts re the Ray's being Cherokee Indian. While I have heard mention of it from another person, I have never found anyone who could offer any proof - just vague reference or folklore. (Not saying it isn't true, just never heard anything about it from our close relatives. And never found any proof.) However, there is a wonderful Cherokee Indian story that has been passed down thru the generations in our family. My g-grandfather, John Henry Ray, hunted with some Cherokee Indian men in Putnam County. They hunted together as a group and the men were to evenly divide the bounty. After the hunt, the Cherokee men were to tan the hides (deer I think). But before the process was completed the Cherokee men were forced to relocate to a reservation in Oklahoma. Due to the circumstances, John Henry thought he would not receive his share of the deer skins. However, one night one of the Cherokee men knocked on John Henry's door. The Cherokee man had left the reservation specifically to travel to Missouri and give John Henry his share of the deer skins/hides. Right now I don't recall the exact number, but do remember that there was an odd number of hides resulting in 1/2 of a deer hide for each. John Henry's Cherokee friend had evenly split the bounty. The friend would not linger and eat/visit as he had to hurry back to the reservation before anyone noticed that he was gone. (I have that story on a tape somewhere - recorded by my uncle. My uncle was known for his love of storytelling and often embellished on the details :-). But the basics of the story were always passed down as being a true story.)
