From research done by Nancy Gilstrap Mann (Idolet Gilstrap line)the following is a short synopsis of our Gilstrap history. First, any connection to the McRea Gilstrap and subsequent Gilstrap crest took place long after our Gilstrap's left England. Nancy Mann found evidence of a Peter Gilstrap arriving as a indentured servant in Maryland in the early 1700's. There he met and married (abt 1730) a Rachael Aydelott (also spelled Idolet) (dau of Benjamin Aydelott and Sarah Fooks) when his indentured time had been payed off or served. It appears that his indentured service was bough by Benjamin Aydelott. Peter sailed from England under a Capt John Taylor that has ports of call in Jamacia and Maryland. According to earlier records Peter is shown arriving from Jamaica but apparently stayed on until they reached Maryland. Also during this time frame there was a James Gilstrap in Maryland. We know nothing else about James. Several years later Peter and Rachael moved down the Eastern seabord setling in Virginia and later in North Carolina. Some records show that Peter Jr. was born in either MD or VA as were additional siblings. I have a lot of notes along this line and if your are interested let me know via seperate e-mail. Childrens names usually followed a pattern. The fist being named after the father, the second being named after the mothers father and on down following a particular order. Not always the case but that is the reason some names keep reoccuring in a particular line. Marcusg2@suddenlink.net Notify Administrator about this message?
