Hi Sean, Thanks for your post. Matt Gilsenan actually sent me a picture of a Coat of Arms that one of his siblings has on their wall, so I've made a bit of progress. I've subsequently also found a reasonable electronic copy of the same. The info on colours is interesting though. Regarding your permutation of the name though, I do remember an article that my father has that talks about the different versions of the name, and of its origins. I can ask him to try to dig it out if you like, and I could send it on to you (in digital format). I can't remember if it has Gilshannon or not, but it might be enlightening all the same. My memory of it is similar to the info that Steve sent you, but does include spellings with "sh". I can't remember if it came out of an Irish or Canadian paper...or otherwise. It all seems to boil down to the spelling of the name, though, stemming from its Anglicization. The different versions come from spellings derived from the pronunciations of people who probably didn't write very well. As you probably well know, "Sean" is often spelled as "Shawn" here in the Americas. It certainly stands to reason that the same sound in the last name has been distorted in similar fashion. My brother's name is Sean. There's even a little town called "Sennen" on the western tip of Cornwall (at Lands End), which I understand was named for St. Senan. As you've probably discovered on this forum, the family seems more based around Meath. I was born in Dublin myself, but my family is from Meath originally. I'll try to get hold of that article for you. Regards. Rory Notify Administrator about this message?
