Paul,
I am one of only two Gilshannons listed in US phone directories (my Father is the other). We believe that our surname was altered soon after my Great Great Grandfather's (Thomas) arrival to the US circa 1830. There are traces of 2-3 other Gilshannon branches in the US. We cannot find any pre-emigration history to confirm the surname. It was either Gilshenan or Gilsenan. Big mystery.

I've been to Ireland several times and am close to concluding that there is no such name as Gilshannon in Ireland. If you know of any history where a Thomas Gilsenan (Gilshenan?) left Ireland for the US circa 1830 (he would have been about 12 years old), let me know.

Enjoy Japan.
Regards,

Sean Gilshannon
