>Thanks Leslie, >I will have to try and dig a little bit deeper on this one, >can George who was buried in 1615 be traced further back?. Not as far as I can tell. If he left a will, it doesnt appear to survive. I might recommend a look at the parish registers of Kendal, Westmorland (which are transcribed), to give you an idea of how many Gilpins there were, even in the 1500s. >Now heres a cat to be thrown amongst the earlier Gilpins, >this is an extract from an article in the "Westmorland >Gazette",my local newspaper, published Feb 1922 by a >respected local historian, H.F. Wilson. >"Two brothers Walchelm and Joscelm De Gulespin, or De >Gylpin, according to the old family tradition, took their >surname from a place in Normandy, and of course came over >with William the Conqueror in 1066." >The article is quite lengthy and generally concerns the >Gilpin family coat of arms, which seems to have changed >over the years. Did the author find any documentation on these two brothers?? >By the way Leslie, "clarifies", thats not a word I would >be using!. >Your very distant cousin Alan. You may be right, I could be wasting my time. Most "researchers" on the internet are people who are spoon fed from books based on undocumented theories, who have no clue on methods of original research. Most would be very hard pressed to read the wills and parish registers from the 1600s or 1500s. Leslie
