To say that the Gilpins in Westmorland were named after the 'river' Gilpin is not true, it works the other way round, the river takes its name from the family. I find the Irish connection intriguing though, I personally believe that all Gilpins are of Norman blood, spreading elswhere via the Lyth Valley in Westmorland. Could some have gone to Ireland for religious reasons?
