Searching for information on John Gilmore born circa 1833 in Georgia, son of Russell and Minta Gilmore. In the 1850s, John and his family moved to Dale County, Alabama. John married Alice Crittendon. John was separated from his brothers during the 1800s.
His brothers were named Erastus, Eugenus, and Stephen Gilmore. They migrated to Claiborne Parish, Louisiana in the 1850s with their slave owner Joseph Maloy White. During the last decade of the 19th century, many Gilmore descendants moved to southwest Arkansas.
In our oral tradition, naming patters were very important and we continue to maintain the names John, Eugene (Gene), and Steven Gilmore.
